Wedding Planning Guide
Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ
Before you sign with any DJ, ask these. The questions are simple, but the answers tell you everything about whether your reception is in good hands.
A polished website and a friendly first email do not tell you how a DJ will actually run your wedding. These questions do. Ask every DJ you are considering the same set, and compare the answers side by side.
We grouped them the way couples actually think about them: reliability, music, planning, and the fine print. Under each one is what a confident, professional answer sounds like.
The Checklist
14 Questions, and What to Listen For
Reliability & Experience
How many weddings do you perform each year?
Listen for: a real, specific number and comfort talking about wedding flow, not just clubs or parties.
What happens if you get sick or have an emergency the week of our wedding?
Listen for: trained backup DJs on call and a shared plan, so someone can step in with your details ready. Not "it has never happened."
Are you insured, and can you send our venue a Certificate of Insurance?
Listen for: a clear yes, with a COI available to the venue on request.
Where can we read your current reviews?
Listen for: verifiable five-star reviews on The Knot, WeddingWire, and Google, not just quotes on their site.
Music & Personalization
Can we choose our own music and give you a do-not-play list?
Listen for: yes, with tools to build it, and a promise to follow your do-not-play list strictly.
Will you take requests from our guests?
Listen for: yes, as long as they fit your style, with your vision always first.
What if a song we love is not on streaming?
Listen for: they will purchase it if possible, or help you find a great alternative.
Will you also handle announcements as our MC?
Listen for: yes, smoothly and confidently, without being cheesy.
Planning & Timeline
What does your planning process look like?
Listen for: an online portal for music and timeline, plus a real planning call before the day.
Will we talk before the wedding to walk through the timeline?
Listen for: yes, usually 2 to 3 weeks out, covering names, songs, and special moments.
Can you help us build the timeline and order of events?
Listen for: yes, with planning tools and a final review before the big day.
Logistics & The Fine Print
What is included in your price, and what costs extra?
Listen for: a clear list, transparent pricing, and no surprise fees beyond add-ons or travel.
How much reserves our date, and when is the balance due?
Listen for: a clear deposit and due date with flexible payments. Ours: $400 reserves your date, balance due 14 days before.
When do you arrive to set up, and do you bring backup gear?
Listen for: arrival well before your start time and backup equipment at every event.
