The Space
Atop the Boylan Bridge in downtown Raleigh sits Wye Hill, on a site chosen specifically for that elevated view. Chris Borreson and Sara Abernethy, who met in theater in San Diego before moving to Raleigh in 2017, found a defunct space at that spot and turned it into a working brewery and restaurant in May and June of 2019, with friends and family finishing the renovation in just three weeks.
The bridge itself is not incidental. Built in 1883 as Raleigh’s first suspension bridge, it sits at the Boylan Wye, the point where the rail lines split, a historic railroad junction that gives the neighborhood and the restaurant their name. All the beer served is brewed on site, so the space functions as a working brewery underneath the event and dining space, not just a bar pouring someone else’s product.
Capacity & Layout
Wye Hill offers four distinct booking tiers depending on the size of the event. A full restaurant buyout holds 150 seated or 250 standing, a patio buyout runs 100 seated or 150 standing, a semi-private patio section fits 30 seated or 80 standing, and a taproom buyout handles 40 seated or 50 standing. That range means a couple can book the exact footprint their guest list needs.
The patio itself measures 2,000 square feet, large enough to hold a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception across one continuous outdoor space if the guest count fits the smaller tiers, or to serve as just the reception space when the full restaurant is bought out for a larger crowd. All bookings require a three-hour minimum and must be reserved at least two weeks ahead.
Amenities
The patio is partially covered by a 70-foot pergola fitted with natural gas heaters, so outdoor events here are not strictly seasonal the way an uncovered lawn would be. The bar pours house-brewed craft beer alongside signature cocktails and wine, and the kitchen runs Modern American, chef-driven food, so catering and bar service both come from the same in-house team rather than outside vendors.
The property is wheelchair accessible, and weekend brunch runs Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm if a couple wants to scout the space over a meal before booking. Parking is street-based along Hargett Street and Boylan Avenue, with four pay lots within a block, workable for a downtown venue but worth flagging to guests ahead of time.
Location & Getting There
Because Wye Hill sits atop a bridge in downtown Raleigh, the setting itself is the main visual, skyline views from an elevated outdoor patio rather than a garden or waterfront backdrop. That downtown location also means guests are arriving from a dense, walkable part of the city rather than driving out to a rural property, which shapes both timing and dress for outdoor portions of the day.
Sound on the covered patio behaves like a partially open-air space, the pergola and surrounding walls give some containment while the skyline view keeps one side open, so a DJ working there needs speakers angled to hold the crowd rather than lose the mix to open air. Inside the taproom, by contrast, is fully enclosed, giving a tighter, more controlled sound for a smaller taproom buyout event.
