The Space
Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins opened in 2022 as a brand-new venue on the French Broad River Greenway in West Asheville. The property was designed from scratch by two former river guides, Shelton Steele and Joe Balcken, who wanted to create an outdoor-centered gathering space. The design blends Scandinavian and Appalachian styles, with 16 standalone A-frame cabins sitting on steel-reinforced concrete piers for flood protection. The main event space, called the Eddy, occupies 850 square feet and opens onto a dedicated patio, making it easy to flow between indoor and outdoor dining.
The cabins are built for guests, not just ceremonies. Each sleeps up to four people and features a queen bed, queen sleeper sofa, and full bathroom, plus a private balcony or deck. Overnight guests have access to fire pits and ENO hammocks scattered across the property, creating gathering spots throughout the grounds. This is a place where you can host a multi-day event with everyone staying on the property.
Capacity & Layout
The Eddy seats 36 people for a formal seated dinner or 60 people for a standing reception. A separate eight-person conference room called the Boardroom offers a quiet space for meetings or bridal prep, complete with a 60-inch monitor and private balcony overlooking the river. The 16 cabins give you accommodation for up to 64 guests if everyone wants to stay overnight, though many weddings use the space for day events with the event hall only.
The layout is naturally spread out. The Eddy and its patio form the core event space, while the cabins, fire pits, and hammock areas give guests places to gather before and after the reception. A catering kitchen is available for outside caterers to work in, and the on-site bar serves craft brews and cocktails.
Amenities
Because this is also a cabin property, guest overnight accommodations are built in. The catering kitchen allows outside caterers to prepare food on-site. Two dedicated bathrooms serve the Eddy space. A bar with house craft brews is operated by the lodge, and the Boardroom provides a quiet space for the wedding party. Parking is nestled underneath the raised cabin structures, keeping vehicles out of sight.
The property is designed with accessibility and sustainability in mind. Some cabins are wheelchair-friendly, and one ADA-designated cabin is available. The entire complex is built with zero-landfill practices, including compostable serviceware and recycled materials in construction. For couples who want their guests to have an overnight experience without renting a hotel, this changes the entire feel of the wedding.
Location & Getting There
The lodge sits in West Asheville, just across the French Broad River Greenway from downtown. Downtown Asheville is 3 miles away, the River Arts District is 1 mile away, and the Haywood Road area with shops and restaurants is within walking or biking distance. Asheville Regional Airport is about 9 miles south. The property is minutes from both urban Asheville culture and outdoor recreation, bridging two very different experiences.
The Eddy’s interior opens directly onto a dedicated patio with sliding glass walls, giving you genuine flexibility for indoor and outdoor flow. The room has two dedicated bathrooms and good sightlines for sound. The hard floors and 12-foot ceilings provide natural acoustics suitable for DJ sound, and the dedicated patio gives you outdoor audio space separate from the cabin areas if weather permits.
