The Space
WoodMill Winery sits on 40 acres in the foothills west of the Piedmont, about 1,100 feet above sea level on a plateau that the family has been planting since spring 2001. What started as a small vineyard has grown into roughly 4,000 vines, and the winery itself has grown up around that farming, not the other way around. That order shows in how the property is laid out.
A fire in August 2025 pushed the family to rebuild, and as of this January they were finishing a covered pavilion overlooking the vineyard, on top of the existing climate controlled indoor room, kitchen prep area, and dual restrooms already on site. Couples booking now should ask where the pavilion stands in that timeline, since it changes which outdoor space is ready for a wedding day.
Capacity & Layout
Indoors, the room holds up to 140 guests seated, which is a workable number for a plated dinner with a dance floor still open. Outdoors, the property seats and stands more than 200, so a couple planning a bigger guest list has real room to spread a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception across the grounds instead of packing everyone into one space.
The venue is handicap accessible and built to move large tour groups through comfortably, which tells you the walkways and entry points are wide and level rather than narrow farm paths. That matters for older relatives and for anyone loading in gear, since a DJ setup does not have to fight tight doorways or gravel that swallows equipment carts.
Amenities
WoodMill produces its own wine on site, muscadine, scuppernong, blueberry, blackberry, and specialty blends running dry to sweet, so a couple can pour house wine at their reception instead of bringing in an outside bar. The muscadine harvest peaks mid to late September, which is worth knowing if a fall wedding date lines up with picking season and guests want to see working vines.
A kitchen prep area lets outside caterers stage food without hauling everything from a truck, and dual restrooms mean guests are not funneling through one doorway all night. Valet parking is available too, useful given the plateau setting where a long uphill walk from a gravel lot would otherwise be part of every guest’s evening. A bridal suite is also part of the property, giving the wedding party a place to get ready without needing to arrive already changed.
Location & Getting There
The winery sits in western Lincoln County, roughly an hour from Charlotte, on a plateau about 300 feet above and to the west of the surrounding Piedmont. That elevation is part of the draw, rolling foothill views rather than flat farmland, and it means the drive in climbs steadily before opening up onto the vineyard itself. That elevation also means cooler evening temperatures than the surrounding lowlands, worth planning for if the reception runs outdoors after sunset.
Because the room is climate controlled and enclosed, indoor sound behaves the way any framed interior does, with speakers set to cover the dance floor without fighting wind. The new covered pavilion will add a shaded outdoor option with a roof overhead, which changes how music carries compared to a fully open lawn, so it is worth confirming which space is ready before finalizing a setup plan.
