The Space
Eleven acres in the Blue Ridge foothills near Purlear, Wonderlust Acres grew out of the Stargazer Farmhouse, built in 1920 on land originally held by the Phillips family, one of the town’s founding families. Benjamin, the current owner, bought the farmhouse in 2004 as his first property and lived there for six years before expanding the land, adding five more acres in 2018 to build out the venue it is today.
The centerpiece is the Wonderbarn, a 3,800-square-foot timber-frame barn with an outdoor patio and glass garage doors that open the reception space to the property. A separate building, Night Owl, functions as the bar, lounge and billiards space, with outdoor seating for 84 more, while a Lakeside Pavilion with a dock handles ceremonies and smaller gatherings down by the water.
Capacity & Layout
The Wonderbarn seats 150 for a reception, and combined with Night Owl next door, standing capacity climbs to 200 or 240 depending on how the two spaces are used together. The Lakeside Pavilion, by contrast, is built for a smaller ceremony, seating around 50 on the lawn, so the property naturally separates a larger reception from a more intimate ceremony setting rather than forcing both into one room.
Parking is laid out for 200 guests, which lines up with the venue’s larger capacity figure rather than falling short of it on a full booking. Included amenities, chairs, tables, a movable bar, a drink and ice bin, and an arbor, cover a lot of the rental list a couple would otherwise be sourcing separately, which simplifies the layout planning considerably and keeps the setup day shorter for vendors arriving on site.
Amenities
A full catering kitchen is on site, and the bar setup includes both the Night Owl building and a movable bar that can follow the event rather than being fixed to one spot. Wheelchair access and ADA-compliant bathrooms are built into the property, which matters on eleven acres of farmland where terrain could otherwise be a real obstacle for older guests or anyone using a wheelchair.
Beyond the wedding footprint, the property includes a 10-basket disc golf course, multiple fishing ponds and a large trout stream, along with hiking trails, giving a wedding weekend built around on-site Airbnb stays, Blue Bell Cottage, Ivy Cottage, Summer House and Woodsy Owl, things to do beyond the ceremony and reception themselves for guests staying the full weekend.
Location & Getting There
Wonderlust Acres sits about 2 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and roughly 2 hours from the Charlotte, Greensboro and Johnson City airports, with Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Wilkesboro and West Jefferson as the nearest towns. That distance from a major airport is worth building into a wedding weekend timeline, since most guests will be driving in rather than arriving same day, and mountain roads can add time beyond what a map suggests.
The on-site Airbnb cabins mean a lot of the guest list can stay on the property itself instead of shuttling in from town. Inside, the Wonderbarn’s glass garage doors let a DJ choose between a fully open-air feel with the doors up or a more contained, wind-protected room with them closed, which matters for keeping sound consistent if mountain weather turns during the reception.
