The Space
Wilson Country Club traces back to May 1915, opening on the site now known as Willow Springs Country Club before relocating across town in 1973 once membership outgrew the original grounds. Architect Willard Byrd designed the course at its current location, and it was renovated again in 2005 by John LaFoy, giving the property more than a century of continuous operation under one club identity or another.
For events, the club offers three distinct rooms rather than a single banquet hall: the Ballroom, the Club Room with its windows overlooking the golf course and a marble-top bar, and the smaller Azalea Room, so a couple can pick a room sized to the wedding rather than renting more space than the guest list needs. McConnell Golf acquired the club in 2023, bringing it into a wider portfolio of Carolina clubs.
Capacity & Layout
The Ballroom holds up to 180 guests and comes with golf course views and access to a scenic balcony, making it the room to book for a mid-to-large wedding that still wants a view over the fairways. Overall event capacity across the property runs up to 250 guests, which gives a couple room to combine spaces if the guest list runs larger than any single room comfortably seats on its own.
The Club Room seats up to 70 and looks out over the course through its windows, with a marble-top bar as a built-in feature, while the Azalea Room tops out at 60 guests for a smaller, more intimate event. Between the three, a couple has a genuine choice of scale rather than one room stretched to fit whatever size the wedding turns out to be.
Amenities
Beyond the ballroom and event rooms, the club runs a state-of-the-art practice facility, tennis and pickleball courts, a fitness center, and a resort-style swimming pool, the kind of full-service amenity list that supports a wedding weekend rather than just a single evening. The 18-hole course itself carries a par of 72 across 6,851 yards, with A1/A4 bent grass greens and a course rating of 72.4.
The course includes three lakes and 62 bunkers across its layout, features that make for a genuinely challenging round as well as scenic backdrops for photos taken on or near the course. The club has hosted eight Carolinas Golf Association majors over the years, including the 2010 NC Men’s Amateur, a track record that speaks to how seriously the course itself is regarded in the region.
Location & Getting There
Wilson Country Club operates year-round in Wilson, North Carolina, a private club with roots back to 1915 and a current layout that has stood at its present site since 1973. That long, continuous history under one club, now part of the McConnell Golf group since 2023, gives the property a settled, established feel rather than a newer club still finding its identity.
With three separate indoor rooms to choose from, a DJ setup adjusts to whichever space fits the guest count: the Ballroom’s larger footprint and balcony access give music room to fill a bigger space, while the enclosed Club Room and the more intimate Azalea Room hold sound tighter, which makes the smaller rooms a better fit for a wedding that wants conversation to stay easy on the dance floor’s edges.
