The Space

Williams Dining Hall is a large institutional dining facility on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. The building began serving students in spring 1974 and was fully operational by fall 1974. In February 1975, the Board of Trustees dedicated the building to Dr. Frederick Allen Williams (1909-1970), a former director of planning and development at A&T. The original design featured intersecting hexagons, designed by A&T alumnus W. Edward Jenkins. The building underwent complete renovation between 2000 and 2002 as part of a $250 million campus revitalization plan. The 2002 renovation replaced the brick exterior with towering glass windows and added a balcony overlooking Holland Bowl, transforming the interior experience entirely. In 2010, the traditional long cafeteria tables were replaced with booths, highchairs, and round tables to modernize the dining environment.

The facility now hosts campus dining on two levels, with the upper level serving as the main dining area and the lower level housing branded food concepts and special dining areas. Five serving and cooking stations distribute food service throughout the facility, and dedicated special dining spaces include the Chancellor’s dining room and faculty and staff dining room.

Williams Dining Hall accommodates approximately 1,200 seated guests, a substantial increase from the original 800-seat design following the 2002 renovation. The two-level layout allows for flexible configurations: the upper level can host a reception or dance while the lower level accommodates dining, or the full facility can be used for a single large event.
