The Space
Before it hosted weddings, this room was the refrigeration section of Dock 1053, a warehouse built in 1955 for the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company as a regional grocery distribution center. When the fire code changed in the 1960s to allow sprinklered buildings without a firewall, the original wall separating the Whitaker Mill and Atlantic sides came down and an addition went up, part of why the room reads as one open volume rather than two joined ones.
Chef and restaurateur Coleen Speaks opened the venue in fall 2017, keeping high ceilings and textured concrete floors, and building in a handcrafted wooden bar made from ambrosia maple. We worked this room, and the industrial bones, exposed brick, concrete, and warehouse height, are original rather than added for effect, which gives it a different character than a converted barn or built-for-purpose ballroom.
Capacity & Layout
The grand room is 3,500 square feet and holds up to 150 seated or 300 standing, with black floor-to-ceiling curtains available to partition the space, either to flip it from ceremony to reception or to pull it in tighter for a smaller guest list. That flexibility means the same footprint can serve very different-sized weddings without feeling either cramped or empty.
Attached to the grand room is a 1,400-square-foot covered patio with three glass garage doors that open fully to connect indoor and outdoor space, useful for cocktail hour or as overflow once the doors are up. A private upstairs bridal suite sits in the loft above the grand room, with its own bathroom, separate from the guest flow below.
Amenities
The venue runs a state-of-the-art A/V setup as standard: a 200-inch drop-down screen, a digital projector, and a dedicated DJ and multimedia booth built into the room rather than staged in afterward. That booth placement matters practically, it means sound and any video tie in from a fixed, planned position rather than wherever a table happens to fit.
PoshNosh Catering, the company Speaks founded in 2007, runs the on-site kitchen and caters every event here exclusively, so the food and the room come from the same operation rather than a rotating list of outside vendors, and the menu can be built around the kitchen’s own established strengths rather than a caterer working an unfamiliar space for the first time. Full bar service is available with ABC permits, and validated parking is offered through Dock 1053.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits inside the Dock 1053 complex, about five minutes outside downtown Raleigh near the Five Points neighborhood, close enough for a downtown wedding party to reach easily without being downtown itself. The building’s working past, a cafeteria, locker rooms for dock workers, cooler space, and an egg candling room, is part of what gives Dock 1053 its layered, adaptive-reuse feel.
Guests coming from Five Points or downtown have a short, direct drive, and validated parking removes the usual guesswork about where to leave a car in a mixed-use complex. For sound, the grand room’s concrete floors and warehouse ceiling carry a dance floor with real presence, and the built-in DJ booth means the system is already positioned to fill that volume evenly rather than fighting it from a side table.
