The Space

Welkinweir’s story starts well before it was a garden: in the early 18th century the land supplied timber to the nearby Reading Furnace ironworks, and by the late 1820s a blacksmith named William Morris had bought the property along with its small stone house. He married Mary Ann Rea, the local mill owner’s daughter, and inherited her mill, which his son Edwin ran until his death in 1898; between the two of them, the original dwelling roughly doubled in size by 1860.

Everett and Grace Rodebaugh of Philadelphia bought the 162-acre farm in 1935 as a weekend retreat and eventually settled there full time, spending decades laying out formal gardens, digging seven ponds, and reforesting cleared hillsides across the property. They named it Welkinweir, Old English for "where sky meets water," and a major mansion addition designed by architect Fridtjof Tobiessen was completed in 1940, joining dwelling sections that date back to around 1750 and 1830.

A wedding here can seat around 150 guests, with the estate offering distinct spaces for each part of the day: garden terraces and the ruins of a stone barn overlooking a pond serve as ceremony sites, while the reception can happen either inside the historic stone mansion or in a separate tent set up in the gardens. That split between an indoor estate house and an outdoor tented layout gives a couple real choice in how formal or how open-air the reception feels.

The reception tent itself comes with a hardwood floor and a stone dance floor, plus clear skylight panels overhead, so a tented reception still has a defined, finished floor to dance on rather than open ground. Dual climate-controlled get-ready suites let two wedding parties prepare on site at the same time, each in their own space, ahead of a ceremony among the garden terraces or barn ruins.

Welkinweir is not just a wedding venue by way of a marketing add-on; it is the working headquarters of the Green Valleys Watershed Association, founded here in 1964 by the Rodebaughs to protect the French Creek watershed from a proposed reservoir, and the grounds are still run with that mission active, including an 85 percent reduction in the property’s carbon footprint through solar panels, a micro-hydro system, and porous paved parking. The estate includes a 55-acre arboretum planted with rare and unusual trees and shrubs.

Most areas of the venue are handicap accessible, and parking includes shuttle service to an overflow lot for larger events, so guest logistics are handled even when the crowd outgrows the main lot. The Rodebaughs placed the property under a conservation easement in 1976, meaning the gardens, ponds, and forested grounds a couple walks through today are protected from future development.

Welkinweir sits on 197 acres in East Nantmeal Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2001. The grounds include five ponds, a meandering brook, and the remnants of a 200-year-old barn and springhouse alongside the formal gardens, so the property reads as a genuine historic working landscape rather than a garden built purely for events.
