The Space

The building at Waterline Brewing dates to the 1930s and 1940s, when it operated as the Jacobi Hardware Warehouse, built from concrete block, cinder block, and rough-cut heart-pine timbers that still show in the finished taproom. Rob and Eve Robinson and Brian Bell opened the brewery inside it on December 5, 2015. Rob spent over 25 years in the military before retiring to found the business, and the brewery is veteran-owned, a detail that shapes the straightforward, unpretentious feel of the room.

Inside sits a state-of-the-art steam-fired 20-barrel brewing system, visible from the taproom, and the property runs right up under the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge with views out over the Cape Fear River. Weekends bring food trucks and the place is dog-friendly and family-friendly, so a wedding or reception booked here inherits that same relaxed, working-brewery character rather than a formal banquet room feel. Guests move between an indoor taproom and an outdoor beer garden as the evening goes.

Capacity & Layout

The taproom itself seats 50 to 150 people, which puts a firm ceiling on an indoor guest list and makes it a fit for a wedding or reception scaled to a close group rather than a large one. The brewing area alongside it holds about 50 more. For a couple weighing where to put a dance floor, this means the indoor footprint reads as one open room built around the bar and brewing equipment, not a series of separate halls.

Step outside and the numbers change: the beer garden and its stage can hold up to 2,500 people for festivals and concerts, so a couple who wants an outdoor cocktail hour has real room to spread out. Waterline books events for groups of 25 or more, with reservations required at least 5 days ahead, so a wedding party can plan headcount with the venue well before the date.

Amenities

Waterline provides ample free parking, which removes one of the more common headaches for wedding guests arriving downtown, along with a stage, a projector and screen, and speakers and a microphone already in place for events. For a DJ, having house speakers and a microphone as a baseline means less gear to truck in and a faster setup, and the stage gives a natural spot for a band, a first dance, or a toast without borrowing floor space from the dance area.

The brewery is dog-friendly and family-friendly, and weekend food trucks are a regular part of the scene, so couples who want a casual, come-as-you-are reception rather than a plated dinner have that built in already. The taproom’s own beer, including the Wee Heavy that won a Bronze Medal at the 2020 Great American Beer Festival, gives guests something to talk about beyond the usual open bar, and it is a detail that fits the working-brewery setting rather than sitting apart from it.

Location & Getting There

Waterline sits right under the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge in Wilmington, with the Cape Fear River running past it, so photos taken along the outdoor beer garden pick up water and bridge steel rather than a parking lot backdrop. We have played a reception here before, and the layout works the way a couple would expect walking in: taproom for the formal parts of the evening, beer garden for anything that needs open air and room to move.

The taproom’s cinder block and heart-pine construction means hard, reflective surfaces indoors, so a DJ setup there benefits from speakers already built into the space and a smaller footprint kept tight to the bar. Move the same setup out to the beer garden and the sound opens up under open sky with a stage already in place, which makes it easy to keep music consistent whether the crowd is in the taproom or spread across the outdoor space.
