The Space
Wachesaw Plantation Club sits on ground with real history behind it: two 18th century rice plantations once worked this land before it became a gated golf community. The club itself was founded in 1985 as what it called the premier private country club on South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, and it still carries a resort feel from its golf and river holdings today.
The property is also designated a South Carolina Wildlife Refuge, and the University of South Carolina has used it as an archaeological project, which points to how much of the original landscape the club has kept intact around its more modern amenities. A clubhouse, riverfront restaurant, and poolside cafe make up the club’s built spaces available to members and their guests for private events.
Capacity & Layout
The club does not publish a fixed guest count for weddings the way a dedicated banquet hall would, since its event spaces sit inside a working country club built primarily around golf, tennis, and the pool. A couple planning a reception here is working within a clubhouse layout rather than a room designed from the ground up as a wedding venue, which shapes what a floor plan can look like.
What the property does offer at scale is grounds: an 18-hole course designed by Tom Fazio running 6,833 yards at a par of 72, eight outdoor clay tennis courts, and a swimming pool complex, all of which sit along the Waccamaw River. That river frontage is where a lot of the property’s photographic value comes from, more than any single indoor room can offer.
Amenities
Between the riverfront restaurant, the poolside cafe, and the clubhouse itself, the property has more than one dining option built in, which matters for a wedding weekend that might include a rehearsal dinner as well as the reception. The eight outdoor clay tennis courts and the Fazio designed golf course round out the amenities for a wedding party that wants to make a weekend of it.
The club has hosted four LPGA tournaments over the years, which speaks to the level of upkeep on the golf course itself, and that same standard of maintenance carries over to the grounds a wedding would use. For a couple who wants their guests to have something to do beyond the ceremony and reception, the golf, tennis, and pool facilities are already there and ready.
Location & Getting There
Wachesaw Plantation is set inside a gated community near Murrells Inlet, about 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach along the Waccamaw River. That distance from Myrtle Beach puts the club close enough for guests flying into the area but far enough to avoid the boardwalk crowds, on a stretch of river that was rice plantation land two centuries before it was a golf course.
We have worked an event on the property, where the mix of riverside outdoor space and enclosed clubhouse rooms means sound setup depends heavily on which space is booked: an outdoor reception along the water needs a system built for open air with no walls to hold the sound in, while the clubhouse’s indoor rooms behave more like a typical banquet space.
