The Space
The USS New Jersey is a working museum ship, not a built event venue, and that fact shapes everything about hosting a wedding here. Launched in 1942 and commissioned the following year at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, the battleship served through World War II, Korea and Vietnam, the only US battleship used for gunfire support in that last war, before being decommissioned in 1991, closing out decades of active service. The ship earned 19 battle and campaign stars and once served as flagship for Admiral ‘Bull’ Halsey.
After a four-month tow from Bremerton, Washington, through the Panama Canal, the ship arrived home to 50,000 onlookers lining the Delaware River on Veterans Day 1999, and the museum opened to the public in 2001. It sits about two miles from the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where it was built, and today hosts self-guided tours, scouting encampments, and social events on deck, in addition to its role as a memorial to the sailors who served aboard.
Capacity & Layout
At over 887 feet long with roughly 1,100 individual compartments, the ship is enormous, though a wedding held here works with the open deck space rather than the interior compartments, which stay set up as they were in service: the wardroom, admiral’s and captain’s cabins, barber shop, laundry, brig, gun turrets and navigation bridge are all preserved and toured rather than rented as function rooms. The 16-inch gun turrets alone weigh 2,050 tons each and once needed a crew of 77 to load and fire.
We have worked an event on this ship, and the scale of it is unlike any other room on our list: guests are not seated in a ballroom, they are standing on the deck of a battleship with the gun turrets and superstructure as the backdrop. That changes how a couple should think about layout, since the space reads as a landmark first and an event floor second.
Amenities
The ship offers seven decks to tour, and wheelchair accessible areas are limited to the main deck exterior, the anti-aircraft guns and the officer’s wardroom, which matters for any guest with mobility needs. Overnight encampments are offered for groups and scouting organizations, a detail that speaks to how flexible the museum has become about using the ship beyond standard daytime visits.
Regular visiting hours run 10am to 5pm with the last boarding at 4pm, and parking runs $15 general or $20 for VIP. A seasonal ferry runs from Philadelphia between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and NJ TRANSIT’s RiverLine and PATCO both serve the area, giving guests without cars a way to reach the waterfront on their own.
Location & Getting There
The ship is docked on the Camden waterfront, on the Delaware River across from Philadelphia. Camden was chosen to host the battleship in 2000 over other bidding cities based on its detailed planning and financial commitment, and the Navy required 35 feet of depth clearance at the dock for the ship to fit, a requirement that shaped where along the river it could be berthed at all.
An outdoor deck event on a steel ship is about as different from an indoor ballroom as this list gets: there are no walls to hold sound in, the surfaces are hard and open to the river breeze, and wind off the water is a real factor, so we plan sound coverage and equipment protection around an open-air deck rather than a sealed room.
