The Space

The Upper Greenwood Lake Clubhouse sits directly on the shore of Upper Greenwood Lake in Hewitt, a lake created in 1932 by damming what was then West Milford Brook, now called Long House Brook. The Property Owners Association formed the following year, in 1933, and purchased the parklands, streets, and the original clubhouse building, which quickly became the hub of community life, hosting everything from boxing matches to religious services before the local church was built in 1938.

That original 1933 building is now a private residence; the clubhouse in use today is the modern structure the Association built to replace it, sized at roughly 3,500 square feet inside with a 2,000-square-foot deck wrapping three sides of the building. Every one of those deck sides looks out over the water, so a couple booking this room is choosing lake views as a default backdrop rather than something they have to seek out or set up for.

There is no published maximum headcount for the clubhouse in the material we have, but the building’s footprint, about 3,500 square feet of interior plus a 2,000-square-foot wraparound deck, gives a sense of scale: enough interior room for a seated dinner with a separate space to dance, and enough deck to move a cocktail hour or the whole party outside when the weather allows. The great room inside runs wall-to-wall carpet, with ceramic tile in other areas, a practical mix for an event that shifts between sitting and dancing over the course of an evening.

Because the deck wraps three sides of the building rather than sitting on just one face, a couple has real flexibility in how they stage the day: a ceremony on one side facing the water, cocktails on another, and the reception moving inside once the sun goes down, all without guests needing to relocate to a separate part of the property.

The clubhouse is heated and air conditioned throughout the interior, which matters for a New Jersey wedding at either end of the calendar, and its restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Just outside, the Association also maintains an outdoor pavilion, a boat launch, and a beach along Lakeshore Drive, giving guests options to walk the shoreline or take in the lake beyond the clubhouse deck itself if the wedding schedule allows a break between ceremony and reception.

Rental is available to Upper Greenwood Lake property owners, so booking here typically runs through that ownership or easement relationship rather than as an open public rental, which is worth confirming early in planning. The lake itself stretches across roughly 450 acres with 10.5 miles of shoreline, so even with the clubhouse as the fixed point, the surrounding views extend well past what any single building could show on its own.

The clubhouse sits atop a 1,135-foot hill in West Milford Township, Passaic County, with part of the broader Upper Greenwood Lake community extending into Vernon Township in Sussex County. It is a lake community first and a wedding venue second, home to roughly 2,100 properties, which means the roads and approach reflect a residential lake town rather than a purpose-built event campus, quieter and more residential than a commercial venue district.

We’ve worked a reception here before, and the building’s mix of hard flooring in some areas and carpet in the great room gives a DJ setup a fairly even, controlled sound indoors, while the three-sided deck means an outdoor portion of the evening, cocktails or a ceremony, needs speakers aimed to carry across open water air rather than off any walls, since the lake itself absorbs sound instead of bouncing it back.
