The Space

TB Tyson built the mansion in 1905 as a family home, and in 1940 the Sinclair family added more than 7,000 square feet of space for the Carthage Furniture Company, a combination that gives the building its name and its two distinct eras of construction. Sixteen fireplaces and hidden archways run through the mansion’s original portion, and the 1940-era sign on the building’s front is, by the venue’s own account, the only one of its size and period left on the East Coast.

The building was slated for demolition in 2021 before veteran-owned management purchased and saved it in March 2022, and today it holds a mix of local retail and studio businesses alongside the second-floor ballroom, so a couple booking here is renting space inside a working downtown building rather than an events-only facility. The mansion rises four floors, including a small lookout area with views toward Pinehurst, a detail worth knowing for anyone hoping to sneak a look before the ceremony starts.

Capacity & Layout

The ballroom fits up to 400 occupants across roughly 7,000 square feet on the second floor, giving a couple genuine room for a large guest list without needing to tent a parking lot or rent a second building. A prep area and two bathrooms are attached directly to the ballroom, so the wedding party and catering team have dedicated space without competing with the building’s other tenants for facilities.

Tables and chairs are available on site, which simplifies the rental list for a couple already coordinating catering, decor and a DJ, though the prep area currently has no wet bar, worth flagging early if a full bar setup is part of the plan. Because the ballroom occupies its own floor, a couple has the entire level to themselves for the day rather than sharing hallways with the building’s retail tenants below.

Amenities

The building’s downtown Carthage location, next to the courthouse, places it inside a walkable historic core rather than an isolated event campus, and the mixed-use nature of the building, with retail, food, photography studios and dance studios on other floors, gives it a lived-in character that a purpose-built banquet hall does not have. Downtown Carthage, right next to the courthouse, means parking and nearby businesses are close at hand for a guest list unfamiliar with the area.

With the ballroom occupying an entire floor of a solid, century-old building, the room offers real ceiling height and a large open footprint for a DJ to work with, closer in feel to a converted warehouse than a modern hotel ballroom, and the enclosed, hard-walled second floor keeps sound contained to the event rather than carrying down into the retail spaces below.
