The Space

Tunnel Creek Vineyards sits on roughly 400 acres of rolling hills in Roxboro, purchased by owners Larry and Sharon Holler in 2013. The couple relocated to South Boston, Virginia during development specifically to eliminate a 200-mile one-way commute from eastern North Carolina, a sign of how much direct hands-on work went into building the property before it opened. The vineyard itself came first, planted in 2013, and the property began hosting events and weddings starting in 2019, well before the winery building existed.

The 8,000-square-foot winery and tasting room opened in September 2020, after more than five years of planning, and the property takes its name from a genuinely historic feature: a tunnel on site built of cement and brick, with railroad tracks running over the top, part of the old Lynchburg-to-Durham rail line. The land itself has deep roots as a hunting and trading area used by the Sappony people and early settlers through the 1700s and 1800s.

Capacity & Layout

The property offers several distinct spaces rather than one fixed room. The tasting room is anchored by two 30-foot custom tasting bars, the Cellar holds wine storage with a rustic ambiance suited to an indoor reception, and a conference room with roundtable seating sits between the balcony and the wine bar. A separate event venue room near the lake gives couples a dedicated wedding-focused space apart from the working tasting operation.

Outdoors, the balcony and terrace provide seating with views over the vineyard, and the grounds include trails leading out to the historic tunnel and a creek bridge, both of which work as a distinctive ceremony backdrop, vines on one side, a genuine 19th-century rail structure on the other. Reception space can run indoors in the event venue room or the Cellar, or outdoors on the terrace and patio, giving a couple real flexibility in how they split ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception across the property.

Amenities

The venue keeps a limited but real food menu available on site: cheese and meat trays, chicken salad croissants, pimento cheese with pita chips, and truffles, alongside wine service from the two custom tasting bars. The property is handicapped-friendly throughout, with an elevator to the second floor, so guests with mobility needs are not limited to the ground level.

An open-air patio with a fire pit and a covered terrace give the property genuine weather flexibility, a fire pit for a cool evening, a covered terrace as a rain fallback, without abandoning the outdoor setting entirely. The vineyard has also picked up real recognition: North Carolina’s Wine Grower of Excellence Award, six consecutive years as Best of Person County from the Courier Times, and a Best Wedding Venue title from the same paper.

Location & Getting There

Roxboro sits about eight miles south of the property, keeping the vineyard genuinely rural while still within reach of a small town for guests who need it. For guests flying in, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the nearest major airport, and the property has its own heliport for a helicopter shuttle direct to the grounds, an option most venues in this price range simply do not offer.

With reception space split between the enclosed Cellar and event venue room and the open terrace and patio outdoors, sound behaves differently depending on which the couple chooses: the Cellar’s wine storage and rustic construction keep sound contained and warm for a DJ setup indoors, while the open terrace and patio, with the vineyard’s rolling hills stretching out beyond, call for equipment aimed and balanced to carry outward without disturbing the quiet of the surrounding land.
