The Space
Trummer’s occupies a building with real depth of history: it opened in 1869 as the Clifton Hotel, built by Harrison G. Otis, and later operated as the Hermitage Inn before Victoria and Stefan Trummer, restaurateurs from New York, opened Trummer’s here in the summer of 2009. The Trummers brought a different scale of cooking to a small historic town, and the restaurant underwent a major renovation in fall 2019 that shifted it from fine dining to a casual American bistro built around a rotisserie.
The wine cellar alone is worth knowing about before booking: it holds more than 8,000 bottles, the largest cellar in the Mid-Atlantic region, so a couple building a reception around wine has serious depth to draw on rather than a standard restaurant list. Executive Chef Zachary Ridenhour runs the kitchen with a focus on seasonal Virginia produce, and Stefan Trummer, an Austrian native, was named one of Beverage Media’s Top 10 Bar Chefs to Watch back in 2007, credentials that sit behind the bar as much as the kitchen.
Capacity & Layout
The building spreads events across three floors and four distinct rooms: the Wine Room seats 14, the Loft Dining Room seats 20, the Gallery Room seats 60, and the Winter Garden, the largest of the four, seats 90. That range means a couple can pick a room sized to an intimate rehearsal dinner or scale up to the Winter Garden for a fuller wedding reception, rather than being handed one fixed room regardless of guest count.
The Winter Garden in particular brings in natural light and looks out over an outdoor waterfall and patio, so it functions as a bright, garden-adjacent room even though it sits inside the building. A downstairs bar and lounge with its own patio seating gives a fifth option for cocktail hour or an after-party separate from whichever dining room hosts the main event, useful for keeping different parts of the evening in different rooms.
Amenities
A ladies’ bridal room upstairs gives the wedding party a dedicated space to get ready or retreat to during the event, a detail worth knowing since not every restaurant venue sets aside a room for this. An indoor fireplace adds a natural focal point for a cooler-weather wedding, and the largest parking lot in Historic Clifton means guests are not competing for street parking the way they might at most venues in this small town.
Catering runs off the restaurant’s full menu, built for events and private functions rather than a separate banquet kitchen, and the full bar carries the same craft cocktail and wine program the restaurant is known for night to night. The building is wheelchair accessible, and its listing in the National Register as part of the Clifton Historic District means the historic character of the rooms, original woodwork and period detail, is preserved rather than renovated away.
Location & Getting There
Clifton sits about 25 miles west of Washington DC, close enough for a day-trip crowd from the city but far enough to feel like a genuine small town rather than a suburb, which is part of what drew the Trummers here originally as the first New York restaurateurs to open a dining destination in Clifton. The historic hotel building once hosted Presidents Lincoln, Grant, Hayes, Arthur, and Theodore Roosevelt, so the walls a couple’s guests stand inside carry real presidential history.
Because the event spaces are split across three floors, rooms vary in acoustics: the Wine Room and Loft Dining Room are small and enclosed, which keeps a DJ setup contained and easy to control at low volume, while the larger, more open Winter Garden, with its natural light and garden views, gives sound more room to spread and calls for a system sized to fill a bigger space.
