The Space
Long before it became a wedding venue, this property was a college campus with a complicated history: Richard A. Forrest founded the institution in 1907 as the Golden Valley Institute in North Carolina, then relocated it to Toccoa, Georgia in 1911 after purchasing the Haddock Inn and 100 acres for a $10 down payment. A fire destroyed the Haddock Inn just two years later, in 1913, and the campus has been rebuilt and expanded in stages ever since.
The most significant event in the campus’s history came on November 6, 1977, when the Kelly Barnes Dam collapsed after heavy rainfall, sending a flood through campus that killed 39 people and caused 2.8 million dollars in damage, destroying married student housing and part of a dormitory. Gate Cottage, built in 1939, was one of the few structures to survive that flood, though it was later destroyed by a separate fire in 2009 and has since been rebuilt with a gift shop and dining area.
Capacity & Layout
Weddings here center on two spaces: the 186-foot waterfall for outdoor ceremonies, and Gate Cottage, rebuilt after its 2009 fire, for indoor ceremonies and receptions, both handling up to 200 guests. Ceremony times at the falls are restricted to no earlier than 4:30pm and no later than one hour before dusk, a scheduling detail that shapes the whole day’s timeline more than it would at a venue without a fixed outdoor ceremony window.
Couples marrying at the falls get electricity on site for AV and sound equipment, but need to rent their own seating from an outside vendor, since the site itself does not provide it, a logistics detail worth building into the budget early. Gate Cottage, by contrast, functions as a complete indoor space for both ceremony and reception, with dining and gift shop areas rebuilt into the cottage after the 2009 fire.
Amenities
The institution, now known as the University of Toccoa Falls after officially changing its name from Toccoa Falls College on July 1, 2026, remains affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance and requires that every ceremony held on campus be a Christian service, officiated by a minister whose credentials the college accepts. The campus is also drug-free, smoke-free, and entirely alcohol-free, rules that apply across every venue space including Gate Cottage.
A bridal suite is available for an additional fee, and the 100-yard path to the falls is handicap accessible, making the ceremony site reachable for guests with mobility limitations without a separate accommodation. The campus sits in the foothills of northeast Georgia bordering the Chattahoochee National Forest, within reach of both Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Greenville-Spartanburg Regional Airport for out-of-town guests.
Location & Getting There
The campus spans 1,100 wooded acres near the town of Toccoa, Georgia, land the institution has held since it relocated there in 1911, giving the property a genuinely long institutional history rather than a recently developed one. Guests driving in should expect a rural campus setting bordered by national forest rather than a town center venue.
Between the two ceremony options, the falls and Gate Cottage, a DJ setup has to plan for very different acoustics: open-air sound competing against 186 feet of falling water outdoors, versus a contained, rebuilt indoor room at Gate Cottage where sound stays inside four walls, and knowing which site a couple has booked changes the whole audio plan for the day.
