The Space
The Village Arboretum opened in 2003 when the Village Heritage Foundation transformed a 35-acre site next to Village Hall into gardens and walking trails at the heart of historic Pinehurst. Landscape architect Larry Best of LandDesign volunteered his design for the property, and a decade later, in May 2013, the Timmel Pavilion was added as the arboretum’s primary covered event space for weddings and other gatherings.
The grounds hold 17 varieties of magnolia and 40 varieties of flowering trees along with 3 miles of natural walking trails, so this is a wedding set inside an actual botanical collection rather than a generic lawn. Joyce’s Meadow, named in 2014 for Joyce Franke in recognition of her role in creating the arboretum, gives the property a second open-air gathering space beyond the pavilion itself.
Capacity & Layout
The Timmel Pavilion, a covered 50 by 30 foot structure, seats up to 150 guests and comes with the rental: 150 white folding chairs, 12 five-foot round tables and 8 six-foot tables are all included, which removes a major rental line item for a couple planning a reception here. That capacity puts this venue in the mid-size range, comfortable for a wedding that wants a full guest list without needing a sprawling hall to fill.
Because the pavilion is covered but open-air, and Joyce’s Meadow offers additional lawn space nearby, couples can split the day between a ceremony on open grass and a reception under the pavilion roof without changing properties. The rental hours run from 8am to 11pm, which is enough runway for a full day of setup, ceremony, reception and breakdown without a rushed timeline squeezing the evening.
Amenities
The Timmel Pavilion includes overhead lights, ceiling fans and Wi-Fi built into the structure, along with on-site restrooms nearby, so the essentials for an evening reception are already in place rather than needing to be rented in separately. Parking is handled with 77 dedicated spaces plus on-street parking along nearby streets, enough for a mid-size guest list without a shuttle plan required.
The property is accessible with volunteer assistance available, and the Assembly Hall Lobby along with its restrooms can double as a dressing area before the ceremony. Because it is a public arboretum in the heart of the Village of Pinehurst, the grounds have the polish of a maintained municipal park, which is part of what makes the gardens photograph well without much extra decor.
Location & Getting There
Sitting next to Village Hall in the historic Village of Pinehurst, the Arboretum is about as central to the town as a venue can be, which makes it simple for local guests and easy to describe to those traveling in from elsewhere. The mix of magnolia and flowering trees changes the look of the grounds through the seasons, so a couple’s photos read as specifically Pinehurst rather than an anonymous garden backdrop.
The Timmel Pavilion’s open sides and ceiling fans mean sound moves outward into the surrounding trees and lawn rather than bouncing around a closed room, so a DJ setting up under that covered structure is working with an open-air acoustic more like an outdoor tent than an indoor hall, with the fans and overhead lighting already wired in to build the setup around.
