The Space
The Underground opened in July 2016 inside the former Bootlegger’s Jazz Club space next to The Fillmore Charlotte, part of the AvidXchange Music Factory complex in Charlotte’s North End. It was built at 9,328 square feet specifically as an intimate rock club, meant to fill the gap between small neighborhood bars and full arena shows, and the first show in the room was a local showcase on July 30, 2016, followed less than two weeks later by the venue’s first national touring act.
The foyer sets the tone before guests even reach the main room, with handmade portraits of Amy Winehouse, David Bowie, and Elvis built from broken music records hanging on the walls. Inside, the main venue holds the stage, three large bars, and the dance floor, while a separate outdoor deck extends the space with fixed seating options and a fire pit for guests who step outside.
Capacity & Layout
Standing capacity runs up to 600, seated capacity is 200, and a theater-style setup holds 350, so the room scales from a large standing reception down to a seated dinner depending on how it is arranged. The outdoor deck adds room for 75 more guests, giving a wedding the option to spread cocktail hour or a smaller gathering outside while the main room is set for dinner or dancing.
A mezzanine level adds a second vantage point above the main floor, useful for guests who want to watch the room from above rather than stand in the crowd, and the venue’s three large bars mean drink service does not bottleneck at a single point even at higher guest counts. With both a theater configuration and open standing room available, the same space can be laid out differently for a ceremony versus a full dance-floor reception.
Amenities
Catering is exclusive to the venue, so outside caterers are not an option here, and the three full-service bars cover drink service across the main room. The sound and lighting systems are described as state-of-the-art, built originally for touring bands rather than retrofitted for events, which gives a wedding reception access to production-grade equipment already installed in the room.
The outdoor deck’s fixed seating and fire pit give the space a second, more casual gathering spot beyond the main venue’s stage and dance floor, useful for guests taking a break from the music or for a smaller portion of the event, like a rehearsal dinner, held apart from the main room. The venue strives to be accessible and asks guests to contact ahead for specific accessibility needs.
Location & Getting There
The Underground sits in Charlotte’s North End, inside the AvidXchange Music Factory complex, about two miles north of Uptown Charlotte. Parking is available in the Music Factory lot across the street past the AvidXchange building, though it can carry fees, and guests coming from Uptown or the surrounding neighborhoods are heading into a dedicated entertainment district rather than a standalone building.
We have worked an event in this room, and it was built from the ground up as a live music venue, which means the state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, the stage, and the dance floor are already tuned for exactly the kind of sound a DJ needs, so setup here is closer to plugging into an existing production rig than building one from scratch, with the outdoor deck available as a quieter overflow space away from the main room’s speakers.
