The Space
The Siena Hotel opened in October 1987, modeled after a private residence in the Italian city of Siena and built with a Tuscan villa’s proportions rather than a standard hotel’s. Columns, arches, and marble run through the architecture, and most of the furnishings were imported directly from Italy and Europe, so the interior reads as genuinely Italian rather than themed. A lobby fireplace anchors the ground floor, with an art gallery and garden nearby.
We have worked a wedding here before, in the roughly 4,000 square feet of meeting space the hotel sets aside for events, and the room carries the same architectural detail as the rest of the property rather than feeling like a generic function room bolted onto a hotel. Il Palio, the on-site restaurant, sits close enough to that event space that catering and hospitality share the same Italian sensibility throughout the building.
Capacity & Layout
The hotel does not publish a specific seated capacity for weddings, but the meeting space totals almost 4,000 square feet, which is the number a couple should use to size their guest list and layout against. All 79 guest rooms carry 12-foot ceilings, Juliet balconies, and sitting areas, so the scale of the building itself, tall ceilings and generous room footprints, tends to carry through into how the event space feels.
Because the hotel is a boutique property rather than a sprawling resort, the event layout stays contained: meeting space, restaurant, bar and lounge, and garden all sit close together rather than spread across separate buildings. That compactness makes a wedding day easier to choreograph, since a ceremony in the garden, cocktails in the lounge, and a reception in the meeting space can flow from one to the next without a long walk or a shuttle between them.
Amenities
Il Palio is the only AAA Four Diamond Italian restaurant in North Carolina, serving farm-to-fork Italian cuisine, and the hotel itself has held AAA Four Diamond status since it opened in 1987, a rating it has kept for decades. An on-site bar and lounge, plus an art gallery and garden, round out the property’s public spaces, giving a wedding party places to gather before and after the formal parts of the day.
Parking is complimentary, with both self-parking and valet available on site, which removes one of the more common headaches for a guest list arriving from out of town. A complimentary shuttle covers most locations within 5 miles of the hotel, useful for a rehearsal dinner or an off-site excursion earlier in the weekend. All 79 rooms include marble bathrooms and sitting areas, giving the wedding party comfortable space to get ready.
Location & Getting There
The Siena Hotel sits on East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, about 17 miles from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, an easy drive for guests flying in from out of state. Franklin Street itself is Chapel Hill’s main corridor, so the hotel’s location puts guests within reach of the town’s restaurants and shops without needing a car for everything during a wedding weekend built around the property.
The roughly 4,000 square foot meeting space sits indoors inside a hotel built with hard, Italian-inspired surfaces, marble, columns, and arches running through its public areas. Hard surfaces like these tend to make a room louder and more reflective than soft-finished ballrooms, so a DJ setting up here should expect to manage some natural reverberation rather than fight total silence, which usually works in favor of a lively dance floor.
