The Space
The Rustic Barn at Half Moon was built by Eddie Lee Jones, Sr. and Patricia B. Jones, a family that set out to bring a distinctive event venue to Onslow County. The main ballroom carries that intent through in its finishes: floor-to-ceiling Cyprus paneling, embossed flooring, and a chandelier holding more than 900 crystals, details that put this well beyond a standard metal event barn.
Sitting just outside Jacksonville’s city limits in rural Onslow County, the property is described as the newest and largest venue in the area, and it was built specifically to give local families a place to mark weddings and other major occasions. Between the Grand Ballroom, an outdoor pavilion, several patios, and additional ceremony spots including one called the Bridge, the venue offers more than a single fixed room to work with.
Capacity & Layout
Wedding and formal-event capacity runs up to 300 guests, with the ballroom able to hold up to 637 standing and the property scaling further, to 450 for conferences and over 600 for outdoor events and concerts. That range means a couple planning a large wedding is not pushing against the venue’s ceiling, and a DJ setup built for 300 seated guests has real headroom if the dance floor fills out later in the night.
Ceremony sites take advantage of the grounds, with outdoor locations overlooking a pond and an expansive lawn, alongside an indoor option inside the ballroom itself. Reception moves between the Grand Ballroom and the outdoor pavilion, and smaller gatherings, in the 25 to 80 guest range, have their own indoor and outdoor spaces so a rehearsal dinner or a smaller celebration is not lost inside a room built for hundreds.
Amenities
A Bridal Suite and a separate Groomsmen Suite give both sides of the wedding party dedicated space to get ready, rather than sharing a single room or using a back office. Bar service is full service with a bartender on staff, and house beer and wine are included in the package; outside alcohol is not permitted, since all alcohol on site must come through the venue under its state ABC license.
Parking is ample, with an overflow lot available for larger events, and the entire facility sits on one level and is wheelchair accessible throughout, a detail that matters for older guests or a wedding party that includes someone using a wheelchair. Between the crystal chandelier, cypress paneling, and embossed flooring, the ballroom’s interior finish work is built to stand on its own without heavy additional decor.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits just outside Jacksonville, in rural Onslow County, a setting that trades downtown convenience for open grounds, a pond, and a lawn that give ceremony photographs real depth. The closest major airport is Wilmington International, a reasonable drive for out-of-town guests, and the rural setting means the venue itself, rather than nearby restaurants or shops, is the destination for the day.
We’ve worked a wedding in this ballroom, and the Cyprus paneling and embossed flooring shape how the room carries sound: paneled walls tend to be less reflective than bare metal barn siding, so a DJ setup here benefits from that natural sound absorption, while the pavilion and outdoor ceremony sites, being open air, call for a different, more directional speaker placement than the enclosed ballroom does.
