The Space
The Public occupies a corner of the Morehead Foundry, a multiplex built inside a 1936 building that had sat as a former industrial and commercial property before its $4.5 million renovation. Construction started in 2015 and the complex opened November 21, 2016, developed by Lee Comer of Fresh Local Good, making it the Triad’s first multiplex concept when the doors opened.
Inside, The Public keeps the building’s industrial bones exposed: brick, concrete, and steel throughout, with a mezzanine level that adds extra seating above the main floor. Heart-pine tables and x-back chairs furnish the room, and the whole 30,000-square-foot Morehead Foundry complex around it holds three restaurants, a bakery, and a members-only speakeasy, so a couple’s event sits inside a larger, already-active building rather than a standalone hall.
Capacity & Layout
The mezzanine is the layout detail that matters most for planning: it gives a couple a second level to work with, useful for a lounge area, extra seating, or simply separating part of the guest list from the main floor action without leaving the building. Because The Public shares its footprint with the wider Foundry complex, the room itself functions as one distinct space within a much larger structure.
Fresh Local Good and Carolina Event Rentals both operate out of the complex, which means the people who run the kitchen and the people who can furnish an event are already on site rather than being outside vendors a couple has to coordinate from scratch. That built-in relationship between the venue, the caterer, and the rental company tends to simplify the back-and-forth of planning a reception layout.
Amenities
Catering runs through Fresh Local Good, the food group behind the whole Morehead Foundry, so a couple gets a kitchen team that already knows the room rather than an outside caterer learning the space for the first time. The Public also has cutting-edge AV and sound systems built in, suited to presentations, listening parties, or live music, which gives a DJ a real technical baseline to work from.
Bar service is covered by Hush, the members-only speakeasy on site, and Four Flocks, the upscale restaurant sharing the building, so a couple has more than one bar option under the same roof. Between the shared kitchen, the rental company, and multiple bars, the Foundry complex is built to run several events at once, which is part of what a couple is booking into.
Location & Getting There
The Public sits in downtown Greensboro, immediately adjacent to the Downtown Greenway, the pedestrian and bike-friendly loop that circles the city center. That location puts the venue within easy walking distance of downtown hotels and restaurants, which matters for a guest list where a good share of people are staying overnight rather than driving in for the evening.
With exposed brick, concrete, and steel throughout the room and a mezzanine adding a second level above the floor, the space has the harder, more reflective surfaces typical of a converted industrial building, so a DJ setting up here benefits from the cutting-edge AV and sound systems already installed rather than needing to fight the room’s natural echo with extra gear.
