The Space

Bearwallow Mountain sits on the ridge of the Eastern Continental Divide, and the Poplars occupies 75 acres of that ridge outside Gerton, roughly 16 miles from downtown Asheville. The property takes its name from the mature poplar trees that shade the grounds, and the elevation and tree cover give the setting a mountain character a couple would recognize immediately from photos of the ceremony lawn.

Two mountain lodges anchor the property alongside the event pavilion. Bearwallow Retreat, completed in fall 2019, sleeps 16 across five bedrooms finished with cabinetry milled from trees cut on the land itself, while Bearwallow Cottage, open more than five years, sleeps 12 across four bedrooms. Both homes come with hot tubs, gas grills, fire pits, and full kitchens, so the wedding party can gather on site the whole weekend, not just the day of.

Capacity & Layout

The Pavilion, 1,600 square feet and covered, holds up to 100 guests and is wired with electricity, water, lighting, and a sound system with speakers already in place. For a couple sizing their guest list, that ceiling means a mid-size wedding fits comfortably under cover, with retractable window enclosures available to close the space in against wind or rain without moving the party indoors.

Ceremonies happen on the Grounds, a naturally shaded outdoor area separate from the Pavilion, which keeps the vows and the reception as two distinct moments in the day rather than one room doing double duty. Between the two lodges, the property sleeps 28 guests overnight, which lets a couple’s closest family and wedding party stay on the mountain rather than driving back down after last call.

Amenities

Bearwallow Retreat doubles as a bridal suite, giving the wedding party a private place to get ready without renting a separate hotel room, and both lodges have fully equipped kitchens that a catering team can use to stage food rather than working out of a tent. The property also offers two off-site hiking trails on Bearwallow Mountain for guests who want to spend part of the weekend outdoors.

Because the Pavilion comes pre-wired with power, water, and lighting, a couple is not paying separately to bring in generators or portable lighting rigs, and the covered structure with retractable windows means a rained-out forecast does not automatically mean a change of venue. The combination of ready infrastructure and two full lodges covers most of what a mountain wedding otherwise has to truck in.

Location & Getting There

The Poplars sits about 16 miles from downtown Asheville, 8 miles from Hendersonville, and 17 miles from Asheville Regional Airport, close enough that out-of-town guests can fly in and reach the mountain without a long drive, but far enough to feel like a genuine retreat once they arrive. Hendersonville and Asheville both offer overflow lodging and services for a wedding party larger than the on-site 28.

The Pavilion’s open-sided, covered design with retractable window enclosures means a DJ is setting up in a partly outdoor space, so sound carries out into the mountain air rather than bouncing off hard walls, and equipment gets positioned to project into the covered area while the enclosures can be closed against wind before the dancing starts.
