The Space
Before it became an event venue, this downtown Durham building lived several other lives: a Modern-style structure raised in 1939 to house a 7-Up bottling operation, then decades later a barbecue restaurant that opened its doors in 2013, carrying on a tradition from its sister restaurant in Raleigh. In May 2022 the building shifted again, converting from a dine-in restaurant into a dedicated full-time event venue while keeping its barbecue roots close at hand.
We worked a wedding here, and what stands out is the mix of textures: a rustic, utilitarian main floor with exposed structure, private event rooms for smaller gatherings, and a rooftop patio that opens the party up to downtown Durham’s skyline. The two levels give a couple two distinct moods in one booking, industrial and grounded on the main floor, open air and elevated on the roof.
Capacity & Layout
The Pit holds over 560 guests across more than 5,000 square feet, a scale that puts it closer to a hotel ballroom than a typical restaurant buyout. For a couple planning their floor plan, that headroom means round tables, a full dance floor, and a stage for a band or DJ setup can all sit comfortably without the room feeling packed, even before anyone steps out to the rooftop.
The layout is built for multiple things happening at once: the venue’s private event rooms on the main floor can run separately from a reception, and full-venue booking, the most popular option, gives a couple exclusive run of every space at once. That flexibility lets a wedding move naturally from cocktail hour in one room to dinner and dancing in another, then up to the rooftop for a change of pace.
Amenities
Food and drink stay in house. The Pit’s on-site catering runs on the same pit-cooked barbecue tradition that built its reputation as a restaurant, and a full-service cocktail bar handles everything from a signature drink to a full open bar. For a couple who wants to skip coordinating an outside caterer, that in-house kitchen removes one whole vendor conversation from the planning list.
The venue is wheelchair accessible throughout, and complimentary valet parking is available for guests, which matters in a downtown district where street parking can be tight on a Saturday night. Between the in-house bar, the barbecue kitchen, and valet at the door, most of the logistics a couple would otherwise have to hire out separately are already built into the booking.
Location & Getting There
The Pit sits in downtown Durham’s Central Park District, minutes from I-85, Research Triangle Park, Duke University, and RDU airport. For a guest list pulling from both the Triangle and further out, that combination of highway access and airport proximity keeps travel simple, and downtown Durham itself gives out-of-town guests somewhere to stay and explore before or after the wedding.
Inside, the main floor’s rustic, utilitarian finishes, exposed structure and hard surfaces typical of a converted industrial building, carry sound well for dancing without needing much extra reinforcement, while the open-air rooftop patio lets a DJ run a lighter, more ambient setup for cocktail hour before the crowd moves back down for the reception, when amplified music becomes the main event again.
