The Space

This building started life as a brewery in 1865, built by German immigrant John C. Seegers in the Italianate style with an architect, Gustavus Theodore Berg, brought in to lay out a saloon and wholesale liquor and ice shop on Main Street. The ice factory downstairs turned out 2,500 pounds of ice every five hours, and the second floor became a meeting hall for two German social clubs through the 1870s and 80s, the Schuetzen Verein and Freundschaftsbund.

The upstairs room takes its name from a different chapter: after the fire of 1865 destroyed Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Sophie Seegers Habenicht let the church’s pastor use this space as his study and office. A 1937 Art Deco remodel covered over the original look, and a 2015 rehabilitation stripped that treatment back out, restoring the facade to its 1880s appearance from an old family photograph and turning the second floor into the event space it is today.

Capacity & Layout

The venue holds 99 guests across 2,500 square feet split into two connected rooms. The Pastor’s Study itself is the smaller of the two, with a fireplace, beadboard ceilings, and arched windows looking out over Main Street, plus the original hand-lettered door still in place. It suits a ceremony or a rehearsal dinner-sized gathering better than a full reception, and couples touring it tend to picture it as the quiet room rather than the dance floor.

Friendship Hall is the larger room next door, built out with a wet bar, WiFi, and its own sound system, and it is where most receptions land their tables and dancing. With a 99-guest ceiling, the math works for an intimate wedding where the guest list is close family and close friends rather than a large crowd, and couples usually walk both rooms during a tour to decide which one holds the ceremony and which holds dinner.

Amenities

The rental includes real furniture rather than a bare room: 75 folding wooden chairs, five church pews, five 60-inch round dining tables, ten 6-foot buffet tables, and four 30-inch bar-height tables, along with built-in wall seating. That is enough seating and surface area to skip a rental company entirely for a guest list at or under capacity, which matters for a couple trying to keep the budget on catering and flowers instead of chair rentals.

Three bathrooms serve the space, and the prep kitchen, with a refrigerator, freezer, sink, and counter space, is built for outside catering rather than an in-house kitchen, so a couple brings in their own caterer and plates from there. Traditional rental hours run 12 pm to 12 am, with special arrangements available on request, which gives a wedding day room to move from an afternoon ceremony into an evening reception without a hard changeover.

Location & Getting There

The venue sits on Main Street in Columbia’s Main Street District, a stretch that carries 36 properties on the National Register of Historic Places, so guests arriving for a wedding here are walking into a genuinely historic block rather than a themed one. Street parking runs along Main Street itself, and two parking garages sit less than half a block away, which keeps arrival simple for a downtown venue with no dedicated lot of its own.

The building earned a Historic Columbia preservation award in 2018 for the adaptive reuse project that turned it back into event space, and that history is part of what a couple is booking here. For sound, the second-story rooms are separated, with Friendship Hall’s built-in sound system carrying the reception while the smaller Pastor’s Study room, with its fireplace and beadboard ceiling, stays quieter, so we run our setup out of Friendship Hall and keep the ceremony room acoustically calm.
