The Space
The current O.Henry Hotel opened in 1998, built as a tribute to a hotel of the same name that once stood at the corner of Bellemeade and North Elm downtown from 1919 until its demolition in 1979. That original hotel was Greensboro’s first modern hotel, designed by William Lee Stoddart and fully booked within six weeks of opening, with more than 300 rooms and a barber shop, hair salon, and ballroom of its own. The 1998 building borrows the original’s colors, design scheme, stone arches, and tile work, so the connection is visible, not just historical trivia.
The hotel takes its name from writer O.Henry, born William Sydney Porter in Greensboro in 1862, and his presence shows up throughout the building: a 1998 portrait of him hangs in the lobby, and the text of his story The Gift of the Magi is etched into the walls above the Social Lobby, where afternoon tea is served. The eight-floor hotel is 100 percent employee-owned through an ESOP, and its event spaces range from small meeting rooms to the ballroom-sized Caldwell Room.
Capacity & Layout
The largest event space, the Caldwell Room, runs 2,982 square feet and holds up to 175 guests, opening directly onto the Social Lobby. The Hawkins Brown Room, at 1,539 square feet, seats 72 or holds 100 standing, and its doors open onto an English-inspired walled garden, giving a couple a natural transition from an indoor reception to an outdoor cocktail hour without leaving the property.
For a ceremony, the Pavilion Room and its adjoining Don Rives Cloister Garden, an orangery-style space covering 1,176 square feet, seats up to 50 guests. Smaller gatherings have the Palmer Room at 350 square feet for 16 guests or the Merchants and Manufacturers Room at 266 square feet for 12, so the hotel scales from an intimate rehearsal dinner up to a 175-guest reception without a couple needing to look elsewhere.
Amenities
Green Valley Grill, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, serves Mediterranean cuisine in a main dining room with nine-yard-high ceilings and handles catering and room service for events, which keeps food service under one roof with the venue itself. The hotel also runs live jazz in the Social Lobby on Thursday evenings from 6pm to 9pm and select Saturdays from 7pm to 10pm, so a couple hosting a rehearsal dinner or welcome event could land on a night the hotel is already carrying live music.
With 130 guest rooms across the property, out-of-town guests can stay where the event is held rather than booking a separate hotel block elsewhere, and complimentary parking and high-speed WiFi are included for guests. The hotel also has a seasonal outdoor pool, a courtyard garden, and a 24-hour fitness center, along with two types of accessible rooms, queen with a shower-tub combo and queen with a roll-in shower.
Location & Getting There
The hotel sits near the Friendly Center Shopping Village in Greensboro, a short drive from Piedmont Triad International Airport, which makes travel simple for guests flying in from out of state. AAA has rated the property Four Diamond, and it also holds a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice award, both markers of a hotel run to a consistent standard rather than a one-off event space.
Between the Caldwell Room’s open floor plan, the Hawkins Brown Room’s doors onto the walled garden, and the enclosed, orangery-style Pavilion Room next to its cloister garden, a DJ setup needs to match the room booked: the larger Caldwell Room can carry a fuller sound system for a big reception, while the smaller, glass-walled Pavilion favors a more contained setup suited to an intimate ceremony.
