The Space

The O’Donnell House started as an Italianate home built around 1840 for Major John Haynsworth, and it has moved once, changed style once, and changed use several times since. In 1891 the O’Donnell family had the house relocated three blocks to East Liberty Street, and in 1905 they brought in architect Frank Pierce Milburn to remake it in Neo-Classical Revival style, adding a gable-end roof that created a third story on top of what was already there.
The front of the house carries a five-ranked, three-story facade with a semi-circular, full-height porch held up by four Corinthian columns, the kind of entrance that photographs on its own before a guest even reaches the door. Inside, the first floor keeps a run of named rooms from its residential past: a cake room, a piano room, East and West parlors, a formal dining room, and a bridal suite alongside a commercial kitchen and office added for its current use as a venue.

Capacity & Layout

The property breaks into three distinct event areas: the ballroom, the historic home itself, and a professionally landscaped lawn, which is unusual flexibility for a single address. Combined, those three areas can hold events from as few as 20 guests up to 500 when the full property is in use, so the same house works for an intimate ceremony in a parlor and a full reception spread across the lawn and ballroom.
The ballroom itself runs about 2,000 square feet, finished with Swarovski crystal chandeliers, marble tile flooring, and a large dance floor, and it sits apart from the historic home’s parlors and dining room, so a couple can separate a formal ceremony inside the house from a reception that opens into the ballroom or out onto the lawn.

Amenities

A bridal suite sits on the first floor near the other event rooms, and the second level holds four bedrooms with four full baths, plus a partially finished third-level space, giving a wedding party real overnight or getting-ready capacity that a converted commercial building would not have. In-house catering is available, which simplifies vendor coordination for a couple who would rather not manage an outside caterer’s load-in separately.
The house earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places on April 25, 1996, a designation tied to its age and its 1905 Milburn renovation rather than to its current role as a venue. Threatened with demolition by a grocery chain in 1993, the house survives today because a local citizen group bought it through a cooperative loan, a piece of its history that couples touring the property often ask about.

Location & Getting There

The house sits in Sumter, South Carolina, near where St. Anne’s Catholic Church anchored a neighborhood once called Little Dublin for its Irish Catholic population, a detail tied directly to Neill and Kate O’Donnell, who were both Irish Catholic immigrants. That history is part of what a couple is standing inside when they tour the property, not a separate fact tacked onto the listing.
Between the marble-floored ballroom, the parlors and dining room of the historic home, and the open lawn outside, a DJ setup has to adapt to whichever area is booked: the marble and chandeliers of the ballroom carry sound differently than the softer, furnished rooms of the historic home, so a system built for the ballroom’s harder surfaces needs to move and re-tune if the reception shifts outside onto the lawn.
