The Space

The Marriott Greensboro Downtown came out of a multi-million-dollar redesign completed in 2020, and the renovation folded in a piece of the city’s own history: Greensboro’s original firehouse is now built into the hotel and houses part of its fitness center. It is the only Marriott in downtown Greensboro, which puts a wedding here squarely in the middle of the city rather than out along a highway exit.

The hotel’s event footprint runs to 28,517 square feet across 15 event rooms and 13 breakout rooms, giving a couple a real range of room sizes to choose from rather than one all-purpose ballroom. The Southern Crescent Ballroom is the anchor space at 6,208 square feet, while the Governors Ballroom and the Virginia, Carolina, and Georgia rooms offer smaller, more contained settings for a rehearsal dinner or a tighter guest list.

Capacity & Layout

The Southern Crescent Ballroom holds up to 750 guests theater-style or 450 seated banquet-style, a wide enough range to fit anything from a mid-size reception to one of the larger weddings this market sees. Because the ballroom is sized for the top end of that range, a smaller guest list will not feel like it is rattling around in too much room; the space can be sectioned to match the count instead.

With 285 guest rooms on site, including junior, multi-bedroom, and presidential suites all renovated as part of the 2020 project, out-of-town guests and the wedding party can stay under the same roof as the reception. That matters for the DJ’s timeline too: no one is racing back to a separate hotel for the after-party, so the dance floor tends to stay full later into the night.

Amenities

On-site catering runs from $34 to $110 per person, and the Lobby Bar and Bistro 40 both serve alcohol on-site, Bistro 40 with American cuisine, craft beer, and cocktails. AV equipment including LCD projectors, microphones, and PA systems is already part of the event spaces, which cuts down on what an outside vendor needs to bring in on the day.

Parking is available on-site for $2.00 an hour or $18.00 for the full day, straightforward pricing for guests driving in rather than staying overnight. We have worked a wedding in this ballroom before, and the room handles a full band-and-DJ night without feeling stretched, which tracks with its size and the flexibility built into the space.

Location & Getting There

The hotel sits steps from the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts and near the Greensboro Coliseum, so guests staying downtown have restaurants and entertainment within walking distance before and after the wedding. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 11 miles away, a short enough drive that out-of-town guests are not losing half a day just getting to the hotel.

Because the Southern Crescent Ballroom is a large hotel ballroom with a high ceiling and mostly hard, flat surfaces, sound carries cleanly across the whole floor, which makes it a strong room for a DJ working a full dance floor rather than a small acoustic setup, and the room’s size means the system needs to be tuned for volume without overwhelming ears near the speakers.
