The Space
The Lucas Farm traces back to 1875, when Dr. George Lucas purchased the property and started a tobacco farm that stayed in his family for generations. The cropland has since given way to 450 acres of longleaf pine, and the grounds spent years hosting film productions, including the 1990s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Current owners David Lucas Jones and his wife Rebecca began restoring the farmhouse, ham house, barn, and schoolhouse in 2019, turning a working farm into an event property.
The main barn runs 2,000 square feet with central HVAC, three chandeliers, tongue and groove pine ceilings, and original rough cut timber walls left exposed. The back barn was finished more recently with cedar siding, a tin ceiling, and 30 foot raise up doors that open the whole side of the room to the pecan orchard beyond, with full electrical service built in for bands, catering, and lighting.
Capacity & Layout
Seated capacity runs to 200 guests, with the back barn holding up to 225 for a standing reception, so the choice of room shapes the guest list before anything else gets planned. Couples can hold a ceremony in the Pecan Orchard, a leveled outdoor site ringed by longleaf pine, or move it into the back barn itself, then shift into the main barn for dinner and dancing, giving the day a built-in weather backup without changing venues.
Rental includes 150 chiavari chairs, 18 eight foot tables, 6 six foot tables, 20 five foot round tables, sweetheart tables, and hightop cocktail tables, which covers most of a standard floor plan without a separate rental order. That leaves a couple’s budget for florals, linens, or specialty pieces instead of the basics, and it simplifies the back and forth between planner and rental company that eats up so much of the months before a wedding.
Amenities
Two separate houses handle getting ready. The Farmhouse, built in 1840 and renovated in 2020, has four bedrooms and two baths for the bride and her party. The Schoolhouse, built in 1903, has two bedrooms set aside for the groom’s side. Keeping both groups on site and out of each other’s way, with wifi available in both buildings, removes the hotel shuttle logistics that complicate so many wedding mornings.
The Caterers Kitchen is equipped with a 500 pound ice machine, a double door refrigerator, and a warming oven, so an outside caterer can run a full service dinner without bringing in extra equipment. A Bar Shed handles beverage service, the property offers free assisted parking, and rental covers 12 hours of access from 10am to 10pm, enough time for a morning setup, a full day of photos, and a proper send off.
Location & Getting There
Currie sits about 20 miles from the Wilmington airport, close enough for out of town guests to fly in without a long drive after landing. The Lucas Farm has picked up The Knot’s Best of Weddings and WeddingWire’s Couples’ Choice Awards in 2024, and we have worked a wedding on the property ourselves, so we know the layout and the load-in from the gravel drive to the barn doors firsthand.
Both barns give a DJ two very different rooms to work with. The main barn’s tongue and groove pine ceiling and timber walls soak up sound and keep a dance floor warm and tight, while the back barn’s tin ceiling and 30 foot doors open the room to the outdoors, which calls for tighter speaker placement to keep the low end from washing out into the orchard.
