The Space

The Liberty occupies a tobacco warehouse built in 1917 on East Main Street in downtown Elkin, one of two such warehouses that once stood on the block. Over the decades the building held cotton and wool storage with horse stalls in the basement by 1942, then wholesale grocery distribution for Cash & Carry Stores and later Brendle’s Cash Wholesale, before sitting vacant for more than a decade.

Elkin native Cicely McCulloch bought the 30,000-square-foot building and put $2.5 million into a 2012 renovation that kept the original pine floors, brickwork, windows, and 100-foot timber trusses in place. While researching the deed, she found that her own great-grandmother had once owned the Liberty Warehouse, so the restoration closed a loop in her own family’s history along with the building’s.

Capacity & Layout

Coley Hall, the main banquet room, offers 5,200 square feet and holds up to 250 guests, or comfortably seats 200 with room left over for a dance floor and cocktail setup. The outdoor East Main Courtyard, set between two historic downtown buildings, adds space for up to 125 guests with a stone walkway, exposed brick, and a cobblestone aisle.

For a smaller event, the Roth Room offers an intimate banquet space for up to 50 guests, so the venue can flex from a large seated wedding down to a small gathering without a couple overpaying for unused square footage. A curved staircase with a lit railing off Coley Hall gives ceremonies and grand exits a built-in focal point that does not require additional decor to photograph well.

Amenities

Round and rectangle tables, cocktail tables, and dinnerware are available to rent through the venue, along with white folding chairs for the outdoor courtyard, a sound system, and microphones already on site. Decorating and rehearsal time are built into the booking, along with access for pre-event photography, so a couple is not paying extra for basic setup time.

Bridal suite and groom’s room access are included for the wedding party to get ready before the ceremony, and parking is available on site with additional options nearby, a practical note for a downtown building on a block shared with other historic structures. The Liberty is one of two tobacco warehouses that once stood on this stretch of East Main Street, so the building shares its block with other structures from the same era.

Location & Getting There

The Liberty sits in the Downtown Elkin Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, about an hour north of Charlotte off I-77 and inside Yadkin Valley wine country. Hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options are all within downtown Elkin, so an out-of-town guest list has somewhere to stay within walking distance, and a couple can build wine country stops into a rehearsal dinner or the weekend around the wedding.

We have worked a wedding in this room, and the century-old exposed wooden beams, weathered pine floors, and distressed brick walls give Coley Hall a warmer, more absorbent sound than a warehouse this size might suggest, while the open East Main Courtyard next door gives a DJ a separate, fully outdoor setup for a ceremony before moving the system indoors for dinner and dancing.
