The Space
The building at the heart of The Laurelbrook started life as a greenhouse in 1969, and the event space keeps that identity: stained concrete floors and three walls made of polycarbonate windows framed in metal struts let daylight fill the room the way it would have for growing plants, not just for show. That greenhouse structure is the reason the space reads as industrial and eclectic rather than as a converted barn or a built-for-purpose ballroom.
Catering Works, the Raleigh catering company founded in 1989, owns and runs the venue, which means food, bar, florals, and bakery can all come from the same team that also manages the room itself, rather than a couple coordinating a separate caterer on top of the venue booking. That single point of contact carries through the whole planning process, from the first walkthrough to the final headcount.
Capacity & Layout
Inside the greenhouse space seats 120 for a dinner, and the covered outdoor patio extends total capacity to 200, so a couple with a guest list toward the larger end can still use the space by counting on the patio for overflow seating or a cocktail hour rather than trying to fit everyone under the glass roof alone. That 120-person indoor number is the figure to plan a seated floor plan around if the whole event needs to fit under cover.
Because both the indoor greenhouse and the outdoor patio are usable event space, the day can move between them: ceremony or cocktails outside under the market lights, dinner and dancing inside where the polycarbonate walls keep the room bright well into the evening before the lighting takes over. Splitting the day this way also gives guests a change of scenery between the more formal seated portion and the looser dancing that follows.
Amenities
The patio is covered and strung with market lights, so it functions as real event space rather than just an overflow area, usable for a ceremony, cocktail hour, or even the reception itself depending on the season and the couple’s plan. Ample on-site parking means guests are not searching for street parking in Midtown after dark.
Parking is ample on site, and because Catering Works runs the venue directly, the bar and catering are handled in-house rather than requiring outside vendors, which simplifies coordination for a couple planning the day. The stained concrete floors throughout mean the room can handle a full dance floor’s worth of movement without special flooring being brought in.
Location & Getting There
The Laurelbrook sits in Midtown Raleigh, less than ten minutes from downtown and about 30 minutes from Durham and Chapel Hill, a central location for a guest list drawn from across the Triangle. That central position also puts it within easy reach of Raleigh-Durham International Airport for guests flying in.
We have worked a wedding in this room, and the stained concrete floor and glass-and-metal walls make for a bright, lively acoustic: sound carries well off the hard floor and window walls for dancing, so a DJ setting up here gets a room that reads more like an airy industrial space than a soft, carpeted ballroom, with the covered patio next door as a quieter option when guests want to step outside.
