The Space

A World War II observation lookout tower anchors the property at the heart of Cape May’s beachfront, and the rest of The Grand Hotel was built up around it in 1997. The result is a modern oceanfront resort with 172 guest rooms and more than 17,000 square feet of banquet space spread across four separate event rooms, each sized differently so a couple can match the room to the day they are planning.

The signature space is the Penthouse Ballroom on the fifth floor, built for the view: 300 degrees of glass looking out over the Atlantic on one side and the town of Cape May on the other. Couples marrying here often hold the ceremony outdoors first, either on the beach across the street or on the hotel’s private oceanfront second-floor sundeck, then move guests upstairs for a reception that keeps the ocean in view through dinner and dancing.

Capacity & Layout

The Penthouse Ballroom seats 400, which puts it toward the larger end of what we work in the Cape May area and gives a couple real room to invite extended family without the room feeling packed to the walls. Because the hotel keeps four banquet rooms in addition to the Penthouse, a smaller guest list is not forced into an oversized space, it can be placed in a room scaled to fit.

With the ceremony on the beach or the sundeck and the reception one floor up in the Penthouse, the day naturally breaks into two locations under one roof, which simplifies timing considerably. There is no shuttle and no drive between ceremony and reception, just an elevator ride while photographs happen, and that logistics chain is part of why the ballroom reads as a natural focal point rather than a rented hall bolted onto a hotel lobby.

Amenities

Because the property is a full-service resort, a wedding here comes with things a rented hall cannot offer: 172 guest rooms for out-of-town family, an Olympic-sized indoor heated pool, and a separate outdoor heated pool that runs seasonally from May through October, plus a fitness center for guests staying the weekend. The on-site restaurant, E.M. Hemingway’s, has been recognized as Best of the Shore Dining in South Jersey, so catering and late-night food are handled without leaving the building.

Guests staying at the hotel get free lounge chairs and umbrellas, complimentary bikes, and free Wi-Fi, and a poolside Tiki bar gives a cocktail hour or after-party a second gathering spot besides the ballroom. The hotel operates 365 days a year, so there is no seasonal closure to plan a wedding date around, and free parking removes one more thing a couple has to coordinate for a guest list arriving from out of state.

Location & Getting There

The Grand Hotel sits directly on the beach in Cape May, a town designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and counted among the oldest seaside resort towns in the country. That means guests arriving from out of town are not just attending a wedding, they are spending a weekend in a Victorian beach town with its own draw, and many will make a trip of it rather than driving in and out the same day.

The nearest airport is Atlantic City International, about 40 miles away, so most guests are driving in regardless of how they fly. With ADA-compliant access and no steps at the main entrance, the property is easy to move through for older relatives. We’ve worked a wedding in the Penthouse Ballroom, and the room’s height and the glass on three sides give a DJ room to breathe: the glass sends sound out over the ocean rather than trapping it, so a system set along the interior wall carries cleanly across the full 400-seat room without turning muddy.
