The Space

This building processed cotton once, and it still shows: the original gin wheels and belts are fixed along the roofline in downtown Prosperity, left in place from the building’s working life, and the brick and mortar walls that housed that equipment are now part of the interior design rather than covered over or hidden behind drywall. Pamela and Brett Reeder, who spent almost ten years in the wedding industry before taking this on, converted it into their own venue.

The main indoor space, the chapel, keeps that industrial character but adds high ceilings, three large crystal chandeliers, wall sconces, and track lighting, so the room reads as finished and warm rather than raw. It’s a building couples will recognize as having done real work in a past life, not a barn built to look old.

Capacity & Layout

The venue can seat 200 guests, using black Chiavari chairs that the venue provides and moves between ceremony and reception setups. Both the ceremony and reception can happen in the indoor chapel or on the outdoor lawn, which gives couples a real choice rather than a fixed sequence, and lets a rainy forecast be answered by moving indoors instead of scrambling for a tent.

Shutters on the building can be opened or closed depending on the weather, which is a detail specific to a converted industrial building: instead of walls that are simply open or shut, there’s a middle setting that lets in light and air on a good day and closes up on a bad one. All facilities are wheelchair accessible, including the path between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Amenities

Standard rental includes five hours for the reception, and access for setup and getting ready begins at 9am the morning of the event, which gives a couple a full day rather than a rushed afternoon turnover. A licensed bartender is required on site for any event serving alcohol, and event insurance is required as well, both standard conditions for a venue this size.

Self-parking is available on site, and a large fan helps with air circulation inside the chapel on warm days, a practical nod to a building that wasn’t originally built for climate comfort. Peak season runs spring and fall, with January, February, July, and August slower, which is worth knowing for anyone trying to book a specific weekend.

Location & Getting There

The Gin on 391 sits in the heart of downtown Prosperity, South Carolina, about ten minutes from downtown Newberry, so it functions as a small-town venue with a real town around it rather than an isolated property reached by a long country drive. It’s also the sister venue to Southern Oaks Event Venue on 378 in Gilbert, SC, run by the same ownership, which is worth knowing if a couple is comparing the two.

Because the chapel is a converted brick industrial building with high ceilings and hard interior surfaces, sound carries well but can also echo more than a carpeted hotel ballroom would: a DJ setting up here should expect a lively, resonant room and plan levels accordingly, especially with three chandeliers and open sight lines across the space rather than walls to absorb the sound.
