The Space
The Duke Mansion was built in 1915 and later expanded by James Buchanan Duke, the tobacco and electric power magnate whose name is on the property, before falling into disrepair and being saved and restored in 1998. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and now operates as a nonprofit inn and event venue rather than a private home, which is part of why it can host weddings at all.
The grounds cover 4.5 acres of historic trees, shrubs and flowers in the Myers Park neighborhood, giving a wedding here both an indoor mansion setting and a genuine garden backdrop for photos. The living room alone runs more than 1,460 square feet, and the property also includes terraces and screened-in porches that look out over the gardens, so there is more than one indoor-outdoor transition point to work with over the course of the day.
Capacity & Layout
The mansion can host private parties for up to 300 people, and total meeting and event space across the property comes to 4,500 square feet, with the largest single room at roughly 1,456 square feet. That split matters for planning: a couple with a guest list near the top of that range will likely be using more than one room across the day rather than fitting everyone into a single space.
Spaces include the large living room, additional meeting rooms adding up to the full 4,500 square feet, the gardens and terraces outside, and the screened-in porches as a covered middle ground between the two. That range of rooms lets a couple split a day between an indoor ceremony or dinner space and an outdoor cocktail hour without ever leaving the property.
Amenities
Twenty guest rooms with private bathrooms are part of the property, which functions as a bed and breakfast when it is not hosting an event, so out-of-town family can stay on site rather than booking a separate hotel and arranging transportation to and from the wedding. A hot Southern-style breakfast is included for overnight guests, and the property will also arrange complimentary beverages and picnics on request.
Parking is complimentary and on site, which removes one more logistics question from the day, and the property underwent a further renovation in 2012 on top of its original 1998 restoration, so the historic building has been actively maintained rather than left as a museum piece. Being a nonprofit also means event proceeds support the organization’s broader mission rather than a private ownership group.
Location & Getting There
The Duke Mansion sits in Myers Park, one of Charlotte’s established residential neighborhoods, about 6.2 miles from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, which keeps travel time reasonable for out-of-town guests flying in. The Myers Park setting also means the mansion is surrounded by mature, tree-lined streets rather than commercial development, so the drive in itself sets a quieter tone before guests reach the grounds.
We have worked a wedding at the Duke Mansion, and the mansion’s mix of a large formal living room, additional meeting rooms, and open-air terraces and screened porches means a DJ has to think about sound differently in each: the living room’s more traditional walls and finishes hold sound the way an indoor reception room typically does, while the screened porches and garden terraces call for a setup built for open air rather than a closed room.
