The Space

The Deauville Inn began in 1881 as the Whelan Hotel, built by Irish immigrant James Carothers on Corson’s Inlet as a stop for fishermen and whalers, and Theodore Roosevelt was among the guests who stayed there under that name. By the 1920s it had been renamed the Deauville Inn and, according to local lore, ran a casino upstairs during Prohibition while entertainers like Jimmie Durante, Sophie Tucker and Eddie Cantor were rumored to pass through.

Charlie and Madeline Weiss ran the property from the 1930s until 1980, when Walter Carpenter, who had worked there as a bartender in the 1950s and 60s, bought it with his wife Gloria and kept it in the family for 40 more years. Dr. Tim Fox bought the inn in October 2019 and restored it into a more upscale version of the same waterfront property, adding a state-of-the-art A/V system along the way.

Capacity & Layout

The property does not publish a fixed seated or standing capacity, which means the room a couple ends up in is shaped less by a headcount ceiling and more by which of the venue’s several spaces fits their guest list and style. Couples planning here should work directly with the venue on which combination of rooms and outdoor areas suits their group, rather than assuming one single number covers every configuration.

Ceremonies can be held on the beach or in other waterfront settings on the property, and the reception can move into one or more of several distinct indoor and outdoor spaces: the Oyster Bar, the Sunset Deck with its 50-foot waterfront bar, the Sandbar, the Dining Room, and the Docks. That range lets a couple split a single wedding across more than one setting over the course of the day instead of confining everything to one room.

Amenities

The Oyster Bar serves fresh seafood and oyster towers, the Sunset Deck runs a 50-foot bar with water views, and the Sandbar offers a casual beachfront menu, so guests moving between cocktail hour and dinner are moving between genuinely different settings rather than the same room rearranged. The Dining Room is reservation-only and looks out over the bay, and the property keeps full bar service running across these spaces.

The docks are staffed by a trained crew for boats arriving by water, and the listing notes wheelchair accessibility and a tent available for outdoor coverage when the weather calls for it. The property runs seasonally, open April through December and closed January through March, so a wedding date here is naturally limited to the warmer months when the outdoor spaces are actually in use.

Location & Getting There

The Deauville Inn sits on the bayside of Strathmere Island, about 3.9 miles north of Sea Isle City and between Sea Isle City and Ocean City, which puts it within easy reach of guests already staying anywhere along that stretch of the Jersey Shore. It is a bayside address rather than oceanfront, so the water views and the dock activity face the calmer bay side of the island.

We have worked a wedding in this room, and the mix of open-air spaces like the Sunset Deck and Sandbar against the more enclosed Dining Room means a DJ has to plan sound differently depending on which space carries the reception: open bay air scatters sound and calls for tighter speaker placement, while the state-of-the-art A/V system already built into the property gives an indoor set in the Dining Room a steadier baseline to build on.
