The Space

A cotton mill built in 1904 sat abandoned for nearly three decades before a husband-and-wife team took it on. D.A. Tompkins originally built it for the Little Mountain Oil and Fertilizer Company, which ginned cotton and pressed cottonseed into oil here, positioned close to the railroad for easy transport to market. After the mill, cannery, and construction company uses ran their course and the building sat empty, the current owners restored it into the venue it is today.

What survived the restoration gives the space its character: vintage hardwood floors, exposed brick, original heart pine timbers, brick arches, a large staircase, and a balcony are all still in place, the kind of texture a hundred-year-old mill has that a new build cannot fake. The large staircase and balcony in particular give a wedding party a natural elevated spot for a first-look photo or a toast that looks down over the whole room. A 30-by-34-foot patio extends the footprint outdoors, and a caterer’s kitchen on-site supports full food service even though the venue itself does not provide catering.

Capacity & Layout

The building holds up to 350 people overall, but weddings booked here come with tables and chairs for up to 200 guests, the more realistic number for a seated dinner reception once dance floor and table spacing are factored in against the full standing-room figure. That gap between the two numbers is worth knowing before setting a headcount, since 350 describes a cocktail-style crowd rather than a seated one.

The 5,000-square-foot interior and the 30-by-34-foot patio work as two connected zones, indoor dinner and dancing paired with an outdoor spot for cocktail hour or a breather from the reception. The caterer’s kitchen sits close enough to both to keep food service moving without a long carry from kitchen to table, and 75 parking spaces mean a guest list at the upper end of the 200-seat range is not left circling the lot for a place to park.

Amenities

The bride’s suite is upstairs, a large space with its own makeup bar and private bathroom, while the groom gets a separate area to dress and relax atop the spiral staircase in the lower building, a genuinely different spot rather than a corner of the same room. That physical separation keeps the two getting-ready timelines from overlapping.

The signature amenity here is the outdoor bar, built from a 1945 city bus cut in half, a fixture that gives the patio a focal point no other venue on this list can match. Four of the property’s parking spots are handicapped-accessible, and the building itself is ADA accessible throughout.

Location & Getting There

The Cotton Press sits about two miles off Interstate 26, minutes from both Newberry and Columbia, which puts it within reach of guests coming from either direction without a long detour off the highway to find it.

Indoors, the exposed brick arches and heart pine timbers carry sound differently than a modern hall, giving a DJ setup a fuller, more resonant room to fill, while the patio outside stays open-air and needs its own separate sound plan for anyone gathered around the old bus bar during cocktail hour.
