The Space

An ice cream parlor for thirty years before it became a wedding venue, this 1893 building has carried a lot of downtown Wake Forest history under one roof. It was built for Dr. John B. Powers and his wife Harriet Brewer, granddaughter of the college’s first president, Samuel Wait, and over the decades it also served as a residence, a general store, and a law fraternity house for Wake Forest College before The Corner Ice Cream Parlor took it over.

Mandy Sykes and her husband Robert bought the building in February 2022, and the ground-floor event space keeps its original wood floors and exposed brick under crystal chandeliers rather than covering that history up. The adjacent Powers-Dodd House adds a second, flexible space that can be arranged for ceremonies, receptions, or smaller gatherings alongside the main room.

Capacity & Layout

Maximum occupancy is 120 people, a number that keeps this historic downtown building working as one intimate room rather than a hall that needs dividing to feel full. That ceiling on guest count suits a couple planning a wedding sized to fit the character of the space rather than the other way around, and the adjacent Powers-Dodd House gives a couple near that top number a way to spread the evening across two connected spaces instead of packing everyone into one room.

Since opening under its current ownership, The Corner has hosted more than 300 events in three years and three months, a pace that points to a layout that turns over efficiently between the main event space and the Powers-Dodd House next door. That volume also means the staff running the room have seen most wedding-day scenarios play out before.

Amenities

Tables, chairs, a sound system, a TV, and bars are all included with the rental, which covers a real share of a typical wedding budget before any outside rental company gets involved. That included sound system is also worth flagging directly to whoever is running music for the day, since it changes what gear actually needs to travel to the venue. The included TV can also run a slideshow or carry a livestream feed for family who cannot make the trip, one more piece of equipment a couple does not have to source separately.

The owners’ daughter, Addison Wollett, serves as The Corner’s Director of Events; she previously worked as a community outreach coordinator for the Milwaukee Brewers, so day-of coordination runs through someone with real event experience. Parking is available on-site, on the street, and in neighboring lots with ample space.

Location & Getting There

The Corner sits at the intersection of North Avenue and North Main Street in downtown Wake Forest, an easy walk from the rest of the historic district for any guest staying nearby or arriving early to explore before the ceremony. Nearby shops and restaurants give out-of-town guests something to do before the ceremony starts or after the reception winds down, rather than sitting in a hotel room waiting on the day.

Inside, the original wood floors and exposed brick that survived from the building’s ice cream parlor days give the room a harder, more reflective surface than a modern hall, so a DJ setup here benefits from the included sound system already being tuned to how this specific downtown space carries music.
