The Space
Donald Padgett designed and built this 2,400-square-foot barn himself, starting the project in 2012 after his daughter Lesley got engaged to Sten Taube and the family decided to host the wedding at home. Donald and his wife Mary cleared 10 of the property’s 13 acres, added fencing, planted trees and grass, and prepared a pond before the barn itself went up, so the grounds were built around the wedding as much as the building was.
The finished barn kept its gambrel roof, sliding barn doors, and a hay loft door with its original pulley and rope still intact. Inside, a 100-year-old bar and back bar came from the Ivy Cottage in Wilmington, and 35 sconces were sourced from a historic hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, so the fixtures in the room have real history behind them rather than being reproductions bought to look old.
Capacity & Layout
The barn interior seats or buffets up to 150 people, and with the outdoor tent and table areas the property has hosted weddings as large as 350 guests, so a couple with a bigger list is not automatically priced out of the venue, they are planning around a tent rather than the barn alone. Several ceremony locations are available across the grounds, giving couples a choice of backdrop without leaving the property.
The venue keeps 500 antique place settings and linens for 50 tables on hand, which is a level of built-in inventory that can meaningfully cut down a couple’s rental order. Two handicap-accessible bathrooms and a small caterer’s kitchen with a covered porch round out the practical side of the layout, so catering logistics are not an afterthought squeezed into a corner of the barn.
Amenities
Since opening in August 2014, the venue has hosted 35 weddings and 12 parties, and it operates year-round rather than closing for a season, which gives couples more flexibility on date. Because the Padgett family built the barn themselves and still runs it as a family business, the level of familiarity with the space and its quirks tends to run deeper than at a venue managed by rotating outside staff.
The covered caterer’s porch gives kitchen staff a sheltered spot to stage food away from guest traffic, and the mix of indoor barn space with outdoor tent capacity means weather does not force an all-or-nothing decision about where the day happens. A couple can commit to an indoor reception with an outdoor ceremony, or scale the whole day up under tents if the guest list runs large.
Location & Getting There
The property sits minutes from downtown Wilmington, close enough for guests staying in the city to reach easily while the barn itself still sits on open, cleared acreage that reads as rural once you turn onto the property.
We have played a wedding in the barn at Rock Creek, and the gambrel roof and open interior make for a resonant room: with hard barn-door surfaces and a high roofline, speakers need to be angled down toward the dance floor rather than up into the peak, which keeps the sound controlled instead of echoing off the beams.
