The Space
The barn at Hillcrest Farm was custom-built by its owners on a private 87-acre farm outside Emporia, Virginia, and they still operate it directly rather than through an outside management company. The barn is semi-climate controlled, with indoor reception seating and a dance floor sized for 150 guests, set within a working farm that also keeps cows, donkeys and goats on the property.
The livestock are not just backdrop: there is a covered cow pen and a custom-designed goat barn, so the animals are part of the property’s daily rhythm rather than brought in for photos. Multiple ceremony locations are available around the site, including right in front of the barn doors, at an arbor surrounded by pine trees, or down by the pond, each with a noticeably different feel for photos and for how the ceremony sounds to guests seated outdoors.
Capacity & Layout
Indoor reception seating and the dance floor accommodate 150 guests, with total capacity across the property reaching up to 180 when outdoor space is factored in. That gap between the indoor and total numbers means a couple with a guest list near the top end should plan for some portion of the celebration to spill outside rather than fitting entirely inside the barn.
The three ceremony options, barn doors, pine arbor, or pond, give real variety in backdrop without leaving the property, which matters at a farm this size where moving between distant locations would otherwise eat into the timeline. The semi-climate-controlled barn bridges the gap between a fully open-air structure and a sealed ballroom, which is worth knowing when planning for a hot Virginia summer or a cold winter date.
Amenities
The property includes a main home, a guest cottage, and a bridal cabin, plus an active Airbnb operation, meaning out-of-town family or the wedding party can realistically stay on site rather than driving in each day. That is a meaningful amenity at a rural 87-acre property where the nearest hotel is not necessarily close.
The venue is wheelchair accessible, and the quiet country setting, surrounded by pasture and pine trees, keeps the property feeling private even though it sits within reach of two major cities. The bridal cabin in particular gives the couple a dedicated space to get ready that is separate from general guest accommodations, rather than sharing a single house with the rest of the wedding party.
Location & Getting There
Hillcrest Farm is about 1.5 hours from both Raleigh, North Carolina, and Richmond, Virginia, putting it within a reasonable drive for guests coming from either metro area without the property losing its rural, private character. That distance is close enough for a day trip but far enough that most guests will want to use the on-site lodging, whether that is the main home, the guest cottage, or the active Airbnb, rather than commute back and forth.
We have worked this room, and the semi-climate-controlled barn changes how sound behaves depending on how open the doors are left: closed up, the barn holds a DJ system tightly for a controlled reception sound, while the open-air ceremony sites by the pond or under the pine arbor need speakers positioned to project against the wind and open pasture around them.
