The Space

The inn opened in 1927, the same year the valley below it filled with water and the town of Lake Lure was incorporated, built as the river was dammed for a hydroelectric project. Its exterior is stucco and arches under a red-shingled roof, a medieval, Mediterranean style modeled on the Italian lake district it was named for. Original oak and pine floors, period furniture, oil paintings, and bronze statues remain throughout the building.

The Grand Lobby holds original antiques and artwork, along with the only known surviving Imhof & Mukle Badenia II Orchestrion, a piece of history a couple and their guests can actually see rather than read about on a plaque. The 1929 stock market crash ended grander plans for the property, an airfield, a yacht club, and a zoo among them, which is part of why the inn itself remains the town’s defining structure.

Capacity & Layout

The property holds up to roughly 200 guests, a number suited to a full sit-down reception without the room feeling stretched. Rather than one large hall, the inn spreads its event spaces across several named rooms, the Tanner Dining Room, the Veranda Terrace, the Lakeside Gazebo, and the Moose & Goose Lounge, so a couple can move guests from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception through distinct settings instead of rearranging one room three times over.

That layout suits a wedding weekend that unfolds in stages: vows outdoors or lakeside, cocktails on the terrace or in the gazebo, dinner and dancing indoors once the sun goes down. Couples planning around 200 guests get the benefit of separate spaces built for each part of the day rather than a single ballroom asked to do everything, which also means setup for later parts of the evening can happen out of sight of earlier ones.

Amenities

Outdoor amenities include a pool, tennis courts, kayaking, canoeing, and pontoon boats, so a wedding weekend here can extend well past the ceremony itself into a day or two of lake activity for the wedding party and out-of-town guests. The Moose & Goose Lounge, on the porch and in its dining room, gives guests a place to gather with drinks before or after the formal reception without leaving the property at all.

The inn’s history as a wartime rest stop for 5,000 combat airmen in the 1940s, and later a stay for Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey during the filming of Dirty Dancing in 1986, gives the property a well-documented past that shows in details like the preserved floors and furnishings rather than a renovated, generic interior. Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Franklin D. Roosevelt, along with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Emily Post, are all recorded as having visited.

Location & Getting There

The inn sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking Lake Lure, a setting that puts water and mountain views into the ceremony and reception backdrop without a couple needing to arrange either one. The town itself grew up around the same 1927 dam and flooding that created the inn, so the inn and the lake share a start date, and much of what a couple sees driving in was shaped by that same project.

Getting to Lake Lure means a mountain drive for most guests, worth planning into arrival times, but the payoff is a resort property where the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception can each happen in a different setting without leaving the grounds.
