The Space
Adjacent to SouthPark Mall, 7.4 acres of Charlotte parkland were converted into an outdoor concert venue in the early 2000s and became Symphony Park. At its center is a 2,700-square-foot stage with a bandshell that juts out over a 1.87-acre pond, a striking setup that has made the park home to the Charlotte Symphony’s outdoor performances since 2005.
We worked an event on these grounds and found the layout genuinely built for large-scale outdoor gathering: a sloped amphitheater lawn descends toward the stage and pond, designed to hold crowds that reach nearly 4,000 people on a busy summer weekend. That scale and the water feature together give the park a park-like, public feel rather than the more enclosed feel of a private event lawn.
Capacity & Layout
The gradually sloping amphitheater design exists specifically to handle large crowds, and it does, standing capacity reaches up to 4,000 people during peak summer events. For a wedding, that scale means the park suits a genuinely large guest list or a public-facing event more than an intimate ceremony, and couples should think through how a sloped lawn setting changes seating, sightlines, and guest flow compared to a flat reception space.
A major renovation is planned here, a $21 million public-private partnership expected to break ground in summer 2026 and finish by summer 2027, which will expand the park from roughly 80 events a year to around 250, adding up to 12,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space and permanent public restroom facilities. Couples planning further out should factor that construction and reopening timeline directly into their date.
Amenities
The bandshell itself provides some weather protection for performers on the stage, and the park currently has gender-neutral restrooms and bike parking on site, practical amenities for an outdoor public venue. Ample parking is available immediately adjacent, since the park sits right next to SouthPark Mall, giving guests a straightforward, familiar place to park without needing venue-specific directions.
Once the renovation is complete, the added restaurant and retail space and permanent restroom facilities will meaningfully change what is available on site, closer to a finished, year-round amenity package than the park currently offers. Until then, couples booking Symphony Park are working with a venue mid-transition, worth confirming current amenities directly against the renovation timeline before locking in a date.
Location & Getting There
The park sits directly adjacent to SouthPark Mall in Charlotte, at the corner of Barclay Downs Drive and Carnegie Boulevard, an established, easy-to-find location for guests unfamiliar with the city. That proximity to one of Charlotte’s major retail and dining centers means guests have plenty of options nearby before or after the event, without needing to travel far from the park itself.
Because the park is a fully open-air amphitheater with a pond between the stage and much of the lawn seating, sound needs real projection to carry evenly across a sloped, outdoor crowd rather than relying on a contained room, so a DJ setup here benefits from the same kind of coverage a concert sound system would use, aimed to reach the back of the sloped lawn without losing clarity over the open water and grass in between.
