The Space

The centerpiece of a reception here is the actual Airbus A320 from US Airways Flight 1549, the plane Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed on the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, saving all 155 people aboard. It was trucked 788 miles from New Jersey to Charlotte over six days in June 2011 on a 190-foot-long trailer, and it now sits inside a museum that reopened in its current form on June 1, 2024.

Playing a reception in a hangar with a real, famous aircraft parked among the tables, which we have done here, is not a background detail, it is the room. The 35,000-square-foot main gallery is organized into two areas, Aviation Society and Innovation Nation, giving a couple a choice of backdrop within the same building rather than one fixed room look. That contrast, formal aviation history housed in a hangar now filled with wedding guests, is part of what makes a reception here memorable rather than routine.

Capacity & Layout

The museum houses more than 40 aircraft total and over 100 historical artifacts, including uniforms and instruments, spread across the gallery, so the room itself does a lot of the decorating work before a single table is set. Both public and private event spaces are available, which matters for a couple deciding whether the reception takes over the full gallery or a defined section of it.

Because the space was built around large, fixed exhibits rather than a blank banquet hall, layout planning here starts from where the aircraft and displays already sit rather than from an empty floor plan. A couple working with a hangar-scale room needs to think in terms of sightlines around the collection, not just a table count against a single capacity ceiling. Couples drawn to the space tend to be ones who want the collection itself to carry the room’s atmosphere, rather than layering heavy decor over a space already built around large, dramatic objects.

Amenities

Free parking is available on site, and the venue holds Smithsonian Affiliate status, a distinction tied to the quality and standards of the collection itself rather than to event services, but one that shapes the overall feel of the room a couple is renting. Multiple accessibility features are built in for guests with mobility challenges, worth knowing for an older guest list. None of these amenities are decorative additions, they are part of how the museum already operates day to day for its regular visitors.

Picnic tables are available on the grounds for public use, though they are not part of a private event reservation. The museum operates year-round with holiday closures on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day, and standard visitor hours run Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 4:30pm and Sunday noon to 4:30pm, closed Mondays, outside of any private event booking.

Location & Getting There

The museum sits on the grounds of Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a fitting address for a building organized around aviation history, and one that puts the venue close to major roads for guests flying in from out of town. Free on-site parking removes one common headache for a reception with a large guest list.

Originally founded in 1992 as the Carolinas Aviation Museum by Floyd and Lois Wilson, the building was renamed in January 2022 to honor Captain Sullenberger before its full reopening in 2024. Inside, the main gallery is a tall, hard-surfaced hangar space built around large aircraft, which gives sound plenty of room to travel, so a DJ setting up here is working with a big, open volume rather than a tightly bounded banquet room.
