The Space

The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts opened in downtown Greensboro on September 2, 2021 with a concert by Rhiannon Giddens, followed by an official opening ceremony that November. The $88 million theater replaced the 2,400-seat War Memorial Auditorium, which was torn down in October 2014 to make way for it, and it is named for Steven Tanger, the Tanger Factory Outlet Centers CEO who pledged $7.5 million toward the project back in 2013.

The building is one of the largest theaters between Atlanta and Washington, D.C., with 3,023 seats finished in white oak and red upholstery across three levels: lower orchestra, upper orchestra, and balcony. Phillips Hall, the building’s 8,000-square-foot lobby, is finished in limestone and glass, and the Greensboro Symphony and Guilford College’s Bryan Series both use the facility regularly, so a couple booking this room is booking the same stage that hosts the city’s resident orchestra.

Capacity & Layout

At a full seated capacity of 3,023, this is by far the largest room in our regular rotation, built for a Broadway touring production rather than a wedding, which means a couple renting it is either filling a genuinely large guest list or using a portion of the house and stage rather than the whole theater. The stage itself is oversized, with an orchestra lift and 70 line sets for draperies and rigging, giving an event planner far more vertical and technical capability than a hotel ballroom stage would ever offer.

Multiple dressing rooms and backstage support space are built into the building, which matters for a wedding party the same way it matters for a touring show’s cast, private, separate rooms rather than a single shared greenroom. Pre-event hospitality spaces are also available for booking alongside the main hall, so a cocktail hour or rehearsal dinner can happen in a separate room from the ceremony or reception itself without leaving the building.

Amenities

The theater’s production capability is built for professional touring shows: an electronic acoustical system and line array sound system, full stage draperies, and 70 line sets for lighting and rigging, all of which is more infrastructure than most wedding vendors ever get to use. Accessible seating is available on every level, along with wheelchair access, assistive listening devices, and accessible parking, so the room accommodates a genuinely wide range of guests without special arrangement.

More than 325 parking spaces are available on site, with VIP parking and additional downtown decks and street parking nearby for larger events, which matters in a downtown venue where guests might otherwise be hunting for street spots. The building itself sits on a 5.5-acre lot bordered by North Elm, East Lindsay, and Summit Avenue, giving it a real downtown footprint rather than being squeezed onto a single narrow parcel.

Location & Getting There

The Tanger Center sits in downtown Greensboro, part of the Piedmont Triad alongside High Point and Winston-Salem, and Greensboro’s television market ranks 46th largest in the country, giving a sense of the scale of a city this venue serves. Guests coming from across the Triad have a straightforward drive into downtown, with the building’s own parking supplemented by the decks and streets surrounding it.

Because this is a professional theater built for touring productions, sound in the main hall runs through the house’s own line array system rather than a DJ’s portable rig, so any DJ working here is coordinating directly with the venue’s house sound and lighting crew, plugging into an electronic acoustical system built for a 3,000-seat hall rather than setting up independent speakers the way we would in a barn or a ballroom.
