The Space

Station No. 2 was built in April 1915 by local architect James F. Gause, Jr. as an Italianate fire station, home to Engine Company 2, six men, two horses, and a two-horse hose wagon. The station ran on horse power until 1918, when the last fire horse was retired, and it kept serving as a working firehouse until 1956, after which the building passed through residential and commercial uses before reopening as an event venue in 2017.

Inside, the main hall keeps its exposed brick, tin ceilings, and original floors, so a couple booking here is standing inside the actual firehouse rather than a new building dressed up to look historic. The venue’s red doors, original to the fire station, are called out as part of Wilmington’s history in their own right, and they remain a defining visual at the entrance today, giving guests a clear sense of what the building used to be before they ever step inside.

Capacity & Layout

The venue seats 80, a size that keeps this an intimate wedding rather than a large-hall event, and the 1,700-square-foot main hall is paired with a 1,100-square-foot walled courtyard, giving a couple two distinct spaces to split ceremony and reception between rather than running everything through one single room.

Upstairs, the Firehouse Suite adds two bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a large bathroom, along with the original fireman’s lockers, fully restored to working order. That suite doubles as a getting-ready space during the day and overnight lodging afterward, and event rates include an overnight stay there, a real convenience for a couple who wants to end the night steps from the reception instead of driving to a hotel.

Amenities

The rental includes real furniture rather than a bare room: fourteen 6-foot tables, six 4-foot round tables, ten high-tops, ten bistro tables, and eighty Chiavari chairs, along with a PA system, speakers, and a 70-inch flat screen TV. The courtyard has been upgraded with flagstone pavers, heritage plantings, its own sound system, and ambient lighting, so it functions as a finished second room rather than a plain side yard.

We have worked a wedding at Station No. 2 before, so the layout between the main hall, courtyard, and suite is familiar to us. The venue is woman-owned and offers a BYOB option or full bar packages with bartender service, giving couples flexibility on how formal or casual the bar setup ends up being for their day.

Location & Getting There

Station No. 2 sits in downtown Wilmington’s Antiques District, close to hotels and dining, and guests have free parking on top of a trolley that loops by every 40 minutes, both of which make a downtown wedding easier to get to and from than a venue further out of town.

Because the main hall is an enclosed brick-and-tin space while the courtyard next to it is open air with its own walls and plantings, a DJ working here typically anchors sound inside the 1,700-square-foot hall, where the brick and hard floors carry music cleanly, while the courtyard’s softer, planted surfaces make it the better spot for a quieter cocktail hour before the reception moves indoors.
