The Space
The Statesville Civic Center opened on New Year’s Eve 1999, the result of planning that had started back in 1986 and construction funded through occupancy tax. At its center is the Great Hall, a 12,000-square-foot room that can be divided into eight interchangeable spaces using removable walls, so the building can shrink or expand depending on what a couple actually needs for their guest count.
The lobby carries a true fresco titled "Crossroads" by artist Benjamin Long, a piece of real public art rather than decor purchased for the room, and it is the first thing guests see walking in. The Civic Center now operates under the city’s Recreation and Parks Department, and it regularly hosts events well beyond weddings, including the North Carolina Main Street Conference, which brought over 700 attendees through the same doors.
Capacity & Layout
The Great Hall holds up to 1,200 people standing or 600 seated at banquet round tables, and that gap between the two numbers is worth planning around directly: a couple expecting a seated dinner should size their guest list to the 600 figure, not the 1,200 one, since the room fills differently once tables and chairs are set instead of open floor space.
Because the hall splits into eight rooms with removable walls, a smaller wedding does not have to rent, or fill, the entire 12,000 square feet. A couple can book a portion of the hall sized to their guest count and still have the option to open the walls for cocktail hour or a larger dance floor later that night.
Amenities
Rental of the space comes with a real amenity list already built in: tables, chairs, white linens and skirting, a podium with microphone, a hardwood dance floor, a projector with screens, a piano, a stage, and a sound system, along with facility-wide Wi-Fi. That is a longer included list than most banquet venues offer, and it means fewer separate rental deliveries showing up on the wedding day.
A commercial kitchen is available on site for catering, or couples can bring in their own approved vendors, and a newly renovated media room adds updated audiovisual equipment on top of the standard package. We have worked an event at the Civic Center before, so the load-in path through the loading dock and roll-up doors is already familiar to us.
Location & Getting There
The Civic Center sits in historic downtown Statesville, and free lot parking is available for guests, which matters for a downtown venue where street parking can be tight. The building is wheelchair accessible throughout, and an outdoor courtyard gives couples a spot for photos or a small gathering outside the main hall without leaving the property.
Because the Great Hall was built with a hardwood dance floor and its own house sound system already in place, and because the room can be closed down to one of eight smaller sections with removable walls, a DJ has real control over how tight or open the acoustics feel, sealing the room down for an intimate wedding or opening the full hall for a larger crowd and louder reception.
