The Space

Spring House occupies the Bahnson House, a 1920 residence on what was once known as Winston-Salem’s Millionaire’s Row, a stretch of downtown Fifth Street once lined with the mansions of the city’s industrialists and civic leaders. It is one of the last of those homes still standing, and after thirty years serving as offices for the Forsyth County Public Library, Lynn and Lynette Matthews-Murphy bought the property in December 2010 and restored it, reopening as Spring House in April 2012.

That restoration kept the house’s residential bones intact rather than gutting it for a banquet-hall layout, so the building still reads as the mansion it was, with seven separate rooms spread through the property instead of one large hall. A garden patio adds an outdoor seating option, and the kitchen operates under Chef Timothy Grandinetti, who builds seasonal menus around locally sourced ingredients.

Capacity & Layout

Seated capacity runs to 40 guests, with room for up to 100 standing, numbers that fit the house’s scale as a restored residence rather than a purpose-built event hall. That range suits an intimate seated dinner or a larger standing reception with passed food and drink, but it rules the venue out for a couple planning a large seated wedding for several hundred.

The seven separate rooms mean a wedding here can be spread across the house rather than confined to one space, cocktails in one room, dinner in another, with the Library Bar available for a quieter pocket of the evening. Outdoor space handles larger tented events when a couple needs more room than the house interior provides, giving the venue some flexibility above its indoor seated number.

Amenities

The Library Bar pours craft cocktails, wine and American craft-brewed beer, a dedicated bar space separate from the dining rooms that gives a reception a natural spot for guests to gather before or after dinner. Wheelchair access is available throughout, and the kitchen’s seasonal, locally sourced approach under Chef Grandinetti extends the same care to catering that went into restoring the house itself.

Parking is handled through two small private lots on either side of the building, two parking garages within a block, and a larger lot between Spring and Fifth Street, so guests arriving downtown have more than one option rather than competing for street spots. For a historic downtown property, that amount of nearby parking is worth noting.

Location & Getting There

The house sits on Fifth Street in downtown Winston-Salem, on ground that was once lined with mansions belonging to the city’s early-to-mid-1900s industrialists and civic leaders, a piece of local history a couple can point out to guests who ask about the building. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places reflects that history.

Being downtown, guests arrive into a walkable part of the city rather than a rural or suburban stretch, with the multiple parking options nearby making that arrival straightforward. Inside, the house’s seven separate rooms give a DJ a choice of which enclosed, formerly residential space to set up sound in, a smaller room for an intimate dinner or the garden patio outdoors when the reception spills into tented space.
