The Space

Sophia’s Lounge occupies a corner of The Ivey’s Hotel in Uptown Charlotte, inside a building that opened in 1924 as the J.B. Ivey & Company Department Store, designed by architect William H. Peeps. J.B. Ivey’s original store had opened downtown in 1900 before the company relocated here, and the building itself went through a stretch as luxury condos starting in 1995 before a multi-million dollar renovation turned it into the boutique hotel that opened in the summer of 2017, with Sophia’s Lounge opening as one of its signature spaces.

Named for Queen Sophia Charlotte, the royal namesake behind the city’s own name, the lounge is built around custom chandeliers, candlelit tables, and art on the walls, a look the venue describes as blending high-design opulence with vintage and European flair. The lounge has picked up recognition since opening, named Best Upscale Bar in 2018, Best Date Night spot in 2019, Best Girls Night destination in 2020, and Best Upscale Cocktail Bar by Charlotte Magazine, and we have worked an event in this room ourselves.

Capacity & Layout

The lounge is arranged as a series of intimate seating areas rather than one open room: a custom-built wraparound bar, high-backed chairs, velvet sofas, and several corners suited to smaller groups sitting down to dine or talk. That layout favors a cocktail hour, a rehearsal dinner, or a smaller private gathering that wants a distinctive, upscale backdrop over a large wedding reception needing one continuous dance floor and a big head table.

Because the space is built from several connected seating areas instead of a single hall, a couple booking an event here should think about how guests will move between the bar, the sofas, and the smaller corners rather than expecting one fixed floor plan for the whole night. The venue can host corporate parties, private events, and celebrations, with an events contact available to help plan how the room’s layout supports the specific size and shape of a gathering.

Amenities

The food menu leans on small plates and sharable appetizers curated by Top Chef alumnus Jamie Lynch, alongside handcrafted cocktails and a wine list from the full bar. Dinner service runs Monday through Thursday from 4pm to 11pm, Friday and Saturday until 1am, and Sunday until 10pm, giving an evening reception plenty of room on the clock, particularly on a weekend when the lounge stays open latest.

Valet parking is available through the hotel for $45 per night, worth factoring into a guest’s budget if they are driving in for the event, and the lounge is wheelchair accessible throughout. The dress code runs casual elegant, with athletic wear, flip-flops, and exposed undergarments not permitted, a detail worth passing along to guests ahead of a night at this particular room.

Location & Getting There

Sophia’s Lounge sits in Uptown Charlotte at Fifth and Tryon, directly across from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, putting it in the middle of the city’s arts and entertainment corridor rather than off on the edge of downtown. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about eight miles away, an easy drive for out-of-town guests flying in for the event, and the hotel setting means overnight guests can walk downstairs rather than needing separate transportation after the night winds down.
