The Space
Doug and Cindy Carroll opened Shady Wagon Farm in 2005, with the first wedding held the following year, after Doug set aside plans for a garage on the property he and Cindy had bought to retire on. Cindy, who had run a wedding cake business called Baking Dreams and Memories, was the one who saw the potential in the land, and the 22 acres in New Hill still carry that origin story rather than a corporate one.
The property sits within easy reach of Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Sanford, and Apex, which makes it a workable choice for couples pulling guests from several of those towns at once. Doug Carroll grew up nearby in Merry Oaks and graduated from Moncure High School in 1961, so the farm sits on ground he has known his whole life, not land bought cold for a business plan. Ducks and geese still live on the grounds, and an old country store building remains part of the property, reminders that this is a working farm that took on weddings, not a venue built to look like one.
Capacity & Layout
The barn, at roughly 2,500 square feet, is climate-controlled and seats or stands up to 200 guests, with tables, chairs, and drapery already included, which takes a real line item off a couple’s rental budget before they add anything else. A main chandelier and thousands of fairy lights are already part of the room, so the space does not need much added on top to feel finished for a reception, whether the plan is a seated dinner or a standing cocktail-style event.
Ceremonies happen on the outdoor lawn overlooking the one-acre pond, where a brick walkway and shepherd’s hooks line the aisle and a white dock sits in the background for the couple to stand on. A covered pavilion behind the barn works as both a spot for outdoor cocktails and the weather backup, so the day’s plan does not have to change if rain moves in.
Amenities
Two dedicated dressing suites, called the Primping Parlor and the Grooming Station, give the wedding party separate spaces to get ready rather than sharing one room or using a barn stall. A prep kitchen for caterers, along with an ice machine and refrigerator, is provided, and complimentary parking is available for guests, so nobody is arranging a shuttle from off site.
For a destination-style wedding, Carroll Manor has offered overnight accommodations since 2023, sleeping 10 to 14 guests right on the property, useful for a wedding party that would rather stay through the next morning than drive home after a late reception. The nearest airport is Raleigh-Durham International, which keeps out-of-town guests within a reasonable drive of the farm and its 22 acres.
Location & Getting There
New Hill sits close enough to Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Sanford, and Apex that guests coming from any of those directions are not facing a long drive, which matters for a farm venue where the ceremony, pond, barn, and pavilion are spread across 22 acres rather than clustered near a single entrance.
The barn is the room built for the reception and the dancing, and its climate control and enclosed walls mean a DJ setup behaves the way it would in any indoor hall: the fairy lights and drapery soften the roughly 2,500 square feet enough that music fills the room evenly rather than bouncing off bare walls, which is not something the open lawn ceremony space by the pond offers.
