The Space
Shadowbrook began in 1907 as a private summer residence, built the year after Dr. Ernest Fahnestock, son of a noted financier, bought the 115-acre George W. Stillwell farm in Shrewsbury and put more than a million dollars into developing the estate. The grand ballroom still carries that original Georgian architecture, 30-foot ceilings, dueling grand staircases, and two built-in bars, alongside a swing band stage that points to how the room was originally used for live music.
After Fahnestock’s death in 1937 the estate passed through a string of owners, running for decades as Rod’s Shadowbrook, a well-regarded restaurant, and later under the Zweben family, before Seasons and The Venetian Catering turned it into a dedicated event venue in 2015 and completed a $30 million renovation in 2019. A 1969 addition, the Regency Room, gave the property the ability to run two separate events at once, a capability that has stayed part of how it books weddings today.
Capacity & Layout
The grand ballroom holds up to 600 guests under its 30-foot ceilings, one of the larger indoor reception rooms in this material, with room enough for a full band or orchestra on the swing stage as well as a large dance floor. The chapel, used for indoor ceremonies, has windows on both sides looking out over the gardens and is fitted with heaters and fans so it functions as a real ceremony space year-round, not just in mild weather.
Cocktail hour runs through the Oak Room, built around a horseshoe bar with brass rails detailed with horse heads, with an outdoor patio available alongside it, so guests move from cocktails into the ballroom rather than staying in one room for the whole evening. The 1969 Regency Room addition means the property can technically run two weddings on the same day without either one crossing paths with the other.
Amenities
The bridal suite occupies two conjoining rooms on the second floor that were bedrooms in the original 1907 mansion, plus a separate room for the bride with a three-panel dressing mirror, and a dedicated bridal salon with four styling stations, bright lighting, lounge seating, and its own kitchen serving breakfast and lunch during getting-ready hours. That is a genuinely full-service prep space, not a single mirror in a side room.
Catering, bar service, and setup are handled on site: tables, chairs, china, flatware, glassware, and linens are all included in the site fee, along with parking, bartenders, a champagne toast, cake cutting, and dessert service, and event planning assistance is part of the package as well. A vintage elevator near the front waiting area also gives the historic building an accessibility option that many houses this old lack.
Location & Getting There
Shadowbrook sits on 18 secluded acres in Shrewsbury with manicured gardens around the mansion, giving a couple genuine grounds to photograph rather than a parking lot dressed up with a few planters. The brass handrails on the grand staircase came from the old Paramount Theater in New York City, installed during a 1982 renovation, one detail among several that tie the estate’s interior to a specific, traceable history rather than generic period styling.
We’ve DJ’d a wedding here, and the ballroom’s 30-foot ceilings and hard staircases give a sound system real room to fill without distortion, well suited to a full band on the swing stage as well as a DJ setup, while the chapel’s window-lined walls and separate covered structure keep ceremony sound contained and distinct from whatever comes later in the ballroom.
