The Space

Legacy Hall still has the bones of the 1939 gymnasium it started as: original hardwood flooring underfoot and open wood trusses overhead, carried through a 2018-2019 restoration after the Town of Selma bought the building and rebuilt it with a mix of donor, corporate, and USDA grant funding. It reads as a genuine historic gym turned event hall rather than a new building dressed up to look old.

Before it became a civic center, the building served as a WPA-era community hall and as Selma High School’s gymnasium, then passed to the American Legion’s Selma chapter around 1940. A smaller adjoining room, the Oak Room, gives the property a second, more intimate space with its own fireplace and private restroom, useful for a rehearsal dinner or a smaller family gathering apart from the main hall.

Capacity & Layout

Legacy Hall measures 4,748 square feet and holds up to 299 people standing or 240 seated at tables, a genuinely large room that can absorb a full band, a dance floor, and rounds for dinner without feeling packed. The Oak Room seats roughly 24, sized for a smaller ceremony, a bridal party gathering, or an overflow space rather than the main event.

A built-in 20-by-16-foot stage sits in Legacy Hall, already wired with sound, a large projection screen, a projector, and Wi-Fi, which changes the planning conversation for a couple: staging, screens, and sound infrastructure are already part of the room rather than something to truck in and set up from scratch. The catering kitchen has counter space and a buffet staging area attached, though no cooking is allowed on site.

Amenities

The kitchen supports buffet-style service and staging rather than on-site cooking, so a caterer needs to plan food preparation elsewhere and finish it in the hall. There is no cooking flexibility built into the room, which is worth flagging early with any caterer a couple is considering, since it shapes the kind of menu that works well here.

A defined list of restrictions applies inside the facility: no smoke or fog machines, oil lamps, sparklers, open flames, birdseed or rice, balls, Frisbees, or helium balloons, rules worth reviewing with a photographer or planner before the day so nobody shows up with a send-off plan that will not be allowed. Amplified sound is also prohibited outside the building itself, which keeps the party contained to Legacy Hall.

Location & Getting There

The Civic Center sits one block from Selma’s Historic Business District and one block behind the Rudy Theatre, directly across from the Selma Fire Department and Johnston County EMS, a genuinely walkable stretch of downtown Selma. There is no dedicated on-site parking lot, but the corner lot allows street parking on two sides plus the adjacent streets, so guests should plan to park along the block rather than pull into a lot.

Because amplified sound is not allowed outside the building, everything for the reception, DJ included, has to run entirely within Legacy Hall itself. That works in the room’s favor: the open wood trusses and hardwood floor of the old gymnasium give the space real height and resonance, so a sound system set up on or near the built-in stage fills the hall evenly without fighting a low ceiling or heavy carpet.
